  • Description

We are a both a hostel and a wetland centre, located in the mountain slopes of Lake Tota shore, Colombia. Our wetland centre educational approach is currently an online service but for 2017 we will start developing it onsite, and our hostel too will start attending this year. Both are an initiative of a local environmental NGO.

Our aim is to build up a good binomium between wetland-tourism and environment, to provide a positive sustainability example to our community, visitors, and to the lake itself.

If you are sensible on nature, education, environmental and social issues, and also with tourism, gastronomy, hiking, camping, animals and the hostel world, in rural areas, then this initiative may suit you well.

  • Help

Our hostel is part of a wetland centre approach, a wider project related to environmental education. Options to help are many, really* (e.g. general support at hostel; educational initiatives to share with rural children/adults either at hostel or in a rural school; ecosystem monitoring; learning tools development; fauna and flora research; beekeeping; trails and hiking routes development; and more). What is more important for us is a genuine will to support the project, and obviously a right match among our mutual interests.

This opportunity gives you the chance to be part of a unique combined project in the area, also to be in an outstanding nature spot of Colombia, sharing with locals through our near-by rural friends and neighbours, their food and daily activities.

Public transportation is not passing through our place, but a bus service can be found at 3 km and five times/day though. We will be in frequent contact, almost daily, but sometimes for a day or two you might be on your own, following our agreed plan.

*We would appreciate if you please send us your profile and tell us which ideas or activities you may wish to develop with us! We are flexible and always open to new initiatives.

  • Accommodation

We can offer accomodation and food in exchange.
Most commonly it will be a stay with a local rural family close to us (with a full board exchange: 3 meals). For this option, a minimum basic Spanish is compulsory.
As an option and depending on availability, it will be a shared situation, with a B&B in our hostel, and lunch&dinner with a rural family.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Lake Tota is a highlight of Colombia from many perspectives (tourism, environment, research, birdwatching, trekking and more), embeded in a "paramo" ecosystem which is a unique spot of nature in a global scale (just 6 countries have paramos, Colombia is the one with most of them -50%-, and our region is highly priviledged to have many options in its territory, including Lake Tota basin and surroundings as some of them).

No internet available in our site yet. To have it is neccessary to go 6 to 10km to one of the near-by towns. Otherwise, on ocassions we can agree for a one day or two exchange work in need of internet, for a B&B stay in another hostel from our family and with a proper internet/WiFi service, located in Sogamoso 27km from our site.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Our project offers a genuine cultural exchange opportunity, in a rural scenario (where foreigners or international travellers are uncommon). Also the chance to get involved with the rural school near-by, through some activities or initiatives -to be agreed with teachers there though-.

This combined project (hostel and a wetland centre) is part of our environmental spirit and NGO, from which we aim to provide wellbeing and benefits to our communities, and we want our workawayers to be part of it -also for them to have a significant interchange experience-.

Why does allow listings of hosts who charge money?

In developing countries (Where most hosts are involved in charity work or community development) some of our hosts may ask for a small donation to help the host family or charity (often less then 5 dollars per day) Workaway will allow this listing when the donation goes directly to the family or charity and is just to cover the cost of the volunteer‘s stay.  (This will be clearly marked on the host listing).
We will strictly not allow listings posted by agents, “middle men” or projects who we feel are looking to profit from a volunteers stay.

    US$5 per day
