    *Dec-Apr.

My name is Michael Stowers. My wife Sara and my kids, Leilani and Sequoia own the First Tracks Madarao. Our lodge is a 10 bedroom lodge and has a 2 great lounges (for kids and adults) a bar and restaurant, sledding and outdoor snow play area. We aim to give guests an amazing experience visiting this wonderful place that we love. Our lodge is warm and cozy and people love the fact that it is more like staying with family and that they enjoy not just the skiing and activities but also coming back "home" for great music, company, snacks, drinks and food. Our staff last year bonded as a family and had a great time and did an amazing job for our clients - now they are are all in Langkawi in Malaysia reunited one last time before they go their separate ways (one couple from Argentinian going to Italy to run a BnB, Japanese architect who is always traveling, and a kiwi couple who have been sailing the world for the last 6 years on their 44 catamaran Our Rose are heading to the Caribbean) . We are looking for wonderful warm and hardworking staff again for Dec 2024 to March 2025.

Living and working in Japan is a magical experience. Japan is a place of amazing diversity with some of the most amazing technology alongside traditions that span thousands of years. You will love the beautiful people, their honesty and openness and the richness of Japanese culture that you can touch and experience so vividly and so easily - from the hot springs, to simple entering a Japanese house, to shopping and visiting centuries olds shrines and temples to the amazing festivals and food, Japan has so much to offer and to learn from. This alpine area is rich in natural beauty and abundant in opportunities to experience and enjoy traditional village life, rice cultivation, art, sake, food preparation that hasn't changed since the first Westerners arrived. It is truly a unique place to touch the beauty of Japan.

There is lots to do in your free time - of course there is the ski hill which is 600 meters away - so you can ski, ski tour, back country on some of the finest powder in the world at the only resort in Japan that has tree skiing - amazing terrain and a great ski field! The tourist association also has snow shoes and arranges Japanese paper making experiences. There are 3 onsens/hot springs you can visit in Madarao, the closest one is up the road about 500 meters walk away - magical way to relax, refresh and it becomes a very meditative process that many people love. Down in Iiyama there are great traditional restaurants. There is also sake tasting and the cultural centre to arrange Japanese experiences in Iiyama and nearby. There are many of the world class ski resorts nearby - a 45 - 1 hour bus or car trip to Nozawa onsen - traditional onsens and great skiing. Shiga and Myoko for more ski adventures. In Obuse village, there is the home of Edo period Landscape painter Hokusai's house and art gallery - the entire town is dedicated to traditional arts and crafts, and as well as the art gallery, there is a market for traditional goods and a 1000 year old sake distillery boasting samples and sales of the best of the region. In Nagano city there is a great selection of sports and clothing and Japanese goods, as well as the sublime Zen Koji Temple. Matsumoto castle is another favourite as it is a well-preserved Samurai era gem that is a short train trip from Iiyama. Many people love the photo opps there especially when the castle has her winter mantle of snow on. The Iiyama tourist information center has a plethora of cultural experiences you can try, from the local festivals, fireworks displays, igloo village, calligraphy, martial arts, language learning, cooking courses and just visiting traditional towns. Another popular attraction is the Monkey onsen, which is also about an hour's bus ride to see the monkey's enjoying hot springs in the snow. Each day you will meet lots of people from around Japan, and those will open windows to visit and expand and enrichen your cultural journey. One of our favourite and least expected highlights was rubbish recycling day, once a week we would go and meet many different Japanese people and learn about their lives and how they had left corporate life for a new adventure - really inspiring and interesting and also ended up visiting lots of the villagers lodges and making new friends. People are very helpful and very friendly, but also expect visitors to be respectful of Japanese customs and culture.
