Nik and Barbara are large hearted and lovely people. Nik has so many unique ideas for various artworks that I always got inspirations from him and enjoyed working a lot. Barbara is very open-minded and considerate person. She always cared about me. I miss her beautiful smiles so much.

On the moment I arrived their place, I decided to do a digital detox even though there were enough electricity and internet there because I wanted to feel those beautiful nature to the fullest. I felt really refreshed.
I could experience various kind of works such as helping his artworks, pruning shrubs and digging out the chicken coop. Chickens and cats were always cute. And Nik and Barbara always complimented me, so I was looking forward to working everyday.
I will never forget all of wonderful memories we made together like going for a drive, joining a book event Nik joined, going to Farmer’s market, having small Japanese party and so on!! Her personality was incredibly buoyant. positive and engaging with whoever she was interacting with. She was such a hard worker; diligent, curious, always asking if we needed any additional assistance every day! We had fun visiting the Farmer's market together, wandering through our lil town, sharing tea and the wonder of the late fall colors which reminded her of home in Japan. She patiently with love and humor mentored us in origami on her last night with us after she prepared a scrumptious Japanese Chicken Curry for us! We would host her again in a minute! Risako is a treasure and we wish her so much happiness in her life!

The property is peaceful and beautiful. The wilderness is just a few steps down the road. I reveled the remoteness as I walked towards the river, no cars, no houses, beautiful views, countless unique bird songs.
It is a fair trade in my opinion, the number of hours to work for staying in the cabin with electricity/internet and I had all the wood I needed to build fires in the fall.
If you’re near Nevada city, this is an excellent opportunity to enjoy some awesome local people and amazing nature!
Staying with Nik and Barbara for my first Workaway experience was nothing short of miraculous!
Being able to help out with any projects these two had before the winter came was quite rewarding. It's great to see how all the work benefited them and what they were willing to provide in exchange, from fresh eggs to brake repair knowledge!

Highly recommend to anyone who would like a slower paced environment nestled out in the woods with some wonderful people!

He was a huge help with chopping wood, digging up a broken water pipe, assisting in my husband's workshop, laying a new foundation for our garden water tank. Also, he was so considerate of staying in our lil cabin, and was super quiet and maintained an upbeat demeanor for the entire stay! He also left the cabin super clean and tidy when he left, and worked beyond his required hours on a regular basis!
He also is a bit of a perfectionist, so he really is motivated to do his best in every way! Any host would be blessed to have Mike as a WA.
We wish him the best, and look forward to pictures from his travels as a tour guide and to welcoming him back when he's in between tour gigs!

The work that they had was not complicated, and they were very clear about what they wanted. They were very laid back to work for, as they communicated very clearly what they wanted, and gave me my space to relax when work was done.

Nik was kind enough to help me with some work on my car that came up during my stay. And Barbara always gave me some eggs from their chickens laid.

… read more just to relax. I really enjoyed the work like preparing firewood, cutting plants, cleaning the shop..was nice to start the day with some physical work! Especially when you have such a wonderful surrounding. And I was also lucky that Nik showed me how to run the chainsaw!
If you take a walk in the woods you should definitely check out the beautiful outlook with the bench Nik and Felix built. There could be no better place to enjoy the nature.
Nik and Barbara were also so kind and lent me and another workaway their truck (I love this truck!!) and their car on several days so we could checked out the Yuba river and Nevada City (and the cute little farmers market).
Even though I only stayed for one week, Nik taught me how to work with stones so that I could make my own which will accompany me from now on. That was amazing!
I‘m so grateful for this wonderful week and would definitely have stayed longer, if I didn’t have to catch my flight. There is so much to learn, explore, share, laugh and to calm down at this peaceful place.

We arrived by car in the beautiful forest setting, aptly named ‘lazy dog road’. Both Barbara and Nik were there to greet us. The atmosphere of calm and peace was evident from our hosts and surroundings from the minute we arrived.

… read more activity. We pruned lavender which I’ve since been told is the work of the angels!! We are hardly angels, but loved the garden tranquility with humming birds and deer roaming around us. The work was very reasonable. We were given good instruction, plenty of gratitude and were left to our own devices to complete the jobs as we wished.
Our accomadation was as described and had everything we needed.
Leisure time was spent swimming in warm river pools, visiting gold rush towns, having a few drinks with Robert ( neighbour) and a beautiful meal in Nik and Barbara’s home. Both Nik and Barbara gave us lots of invaluable advice on how to get the best out of our free time.

The work is great, if you get up early you can have the rest of the day to explore the nearby river which is a lovely place to spend the day. Its definately a must do while you stay here. The work was light and enjoyable and despite my short stay I learned a lot! I chopped firewood for the first time and helped Nik out with building a little roof on the side of his workshop. My stay coincided with Thanksgiving and Nik & Barbara adopted me into their family for a shared meal and I felt right at home. Not to mention, the freshly laid eggs from the hens were delicious!

Aldis was great to have around. Very calm and easy to work with. Fact is, he was only suppose to work 2 hours a day, but as much as I tried I couldn't stop him. He is a machine. I was entrusted initially to misc pressing jobs, in a machine shop and oiling a deck of a secluded temple place for spiritual practice. Soon enough I was clearing a recently cut forest patch, which for me was the most satisfying part of my stay. I could fully immerse myself in the environment I was hoping to see during my travel.
I lived in an individual, detached, fully equipped cabin, with great fast wifi connection.
I can absolutely recommend this stay and experience to anyone looking for a full immersion deep woods mind-body healing or reset.
