UPDATE MAY 2017: We now have capacity to potentially host one workawayer for the next couple of months, until July.
We are a Community Forest Garden is an open access garden in Woodhouse, Leeds, LS6, that aims to educate people on how forest gardening can be a viable alternative to food production, resilient to climactic and social change. We aim to educate volunteers and the local community about forest gardening and wider environmental issues through workdays, workshops and discussion. We believe in the ‘urbalisation’ of our cities – ‘bringing rural life to the city’. Our website is here:
About a third of acre of land in total, we have over 200 species of plants and over 100 edible species and a mixed species hedge planted and fenced off as a wildlife corridor leading to Woodhouse ridge. Last year we welcomed around 100 new volunteers and would like to welcome even more this year. We run workdays, one where we do therapeutic-style gardening, another where we get lots of stuff done! We are a growing volunteer base, growing in knowledge and happiness to share with whoever comes our way. If this sounds like the kind of things you’d like to learn them do send us a message. In the coming weeks we will be putting in a lot of infrastructure to support the project. We will have two days work at the garden, and one day work somewhere close the garden, where the nurseries are located. You will be unsupervised for the rest of the time with workrelated to the garden. Some of the tasks:
- Plant a lot of unusual perennial plants
- Help build the nursery,
- Mulch, weed, harvest, and tackle anything else that comes up in the garden.
We'll host you in the housing co-op, which the leaders are a part of, 2 mins walk from the garden. No bedding or sleeping bags needed and there are sanitary facilities and all that kind of stuff. You'll get fed and so on. We are in a city, so there's plenty of things to do. I (Ben) personally do a lot of foraging and try not to go into the city ever:) We can also show you or point you in the direction of the other urban food growing projects!
If all that sounds good then please contact us. You need to be physically fit and we can accommodate all dietary requirements. You need to bring good outdoor clothes and shoes, but that's about it really.
Once you've contacted us we'll give you directions: Just so you know the garden is only 30 mins walk from Leeds bus and train stations in the city centre so no need to go well out in the country on a bus that goes once a day.
Hope to hear from you!
Ben and the other Bedford Fields Gnomes.
