At present, I am looking for Workaways prepared to stay for at least a month.
I live in central Edinburgh in a popular area called Stockbridge. I have been hosting guests for more than 10 years – mostly from local language schools, acting as 'host family'. I love to share my city with visitors and make connections with people from across the world.
I am a retired journalist, editor, publisher, and taught Journalism at an Edinburgh university. Now that I am retired, I enjoy collecting books, doing crossword puzzles and going to the football.
What I look for from volunteers:
In exchange for a private room in a desirable and central part of Edinburgh, I am looking for volunteers to help with simple tasks around the house for 2-3 hours/day for 5 days out of the week, and to prepare our shared evening meal. I would ask volunteers to stay for a minimum of one month.
I am looking for friendly people who want to experience Edinburgh like a local. There will be lots of free time for you to enjoy the city and make trips to other parts of Scotland, such as the Highlands, the Western Isles or the Borders. The tasks set for volunteers are not difficult or tiring, and for this reason I expect that volunteers will be polite, tidy, engage in conversation and show enthusiasm. A sense of humour is also much appreciated.
Where I live:
Stockbridge is a very popular part of Edinburgh (in 2016 it was named the best place to live in Scotland!) located in the historic Georgian 'New Town'. The neighbourhood is surrounded with greenery, with the Royal Botanic Gardens just 5 minutes away from the house. Stockbridge itself has the feeling of a village within the city, with many shops and cafés. On Sundays there is a farmers market with lots of delicious fresh food to sample and artisanal gifts.
It is only a 10 minute walk to the city centre and 20 minutes to the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle. From the end of our street there are buses every 5 minutes into the city. There are local supermarkets nearby which are open from 7am-11pm. We have lots of parks and pathways for jogging or cycling and a public swimming pool and gym around the corner.
Edinburgh itself is a cultural world capital – with festivals and events on year-round. There is a beautiful walk from our house along the river, The Water of Leith, to the Galleries of Modern Art. Many attractions in Edinburgh are free for visitors – including, of course, a walk up one of our extinct volcanoes for views across the city, the coast and over to the Kingdom of Fife.
I also have an electric Yamaha piano and a guitar that are aching to be used!

Help in the house
-I have some 3,000 books on a wide range of subjects, particularly English literature and Scottish history.
-Practising English with a former university lecturer.
-I have more than 10 years of experience as a home-stay host of language students from around the world.
I would like volunteers to be happy to help with the following daily activities:
-Cooking evening meals, which you are welcome to share, and cleaning afterward.
-Administrative assistant-type tasks such as help with paperwork, clearing my office, and organising my filing system.
Other tasks we may ask for help with include:
-Weeding and general maintenance of the garden is needed in the spring and summer.
-Some cleaning around the house (washing up, hoovering, dusting).

The private room offered to volunteers is a bright turret room with single bed at the top of the house with views across local parks and playing fields. As it is the only room on that floor, it is very quiet and private. There is shared access to the kitchen, bathroom and a utility room with a second toilet. There is high-speed wi-fi connection. You will have shelves in the kitchen cupboard and room in the fridge which you can use for storing your own food.
