Hello workawayers!
We are a German family with 4 kids, now 5, 7, 14 and 17 years old. We grow fruit trees and vegetables, dreaming of having a fruitforest someday....We started the projekt about 7 years ago and are still in construction... we have 5 donkeys, two big friendly dogs and lots of chicken in our 7 ha valley.
The Atlantic is 8km from our place and you can take the bike or join us when we are driving out. At home we have two small lakes and 5 wells..At the moment we have planned to build a shelter for the donkeys and an outdoor shower... You are also welcome to help in the garden, housework and kid's stuff! There's some maintenance work on the houses everytime...
Normally we will work together for 4 hours from Monday to Friday. At the weekend you can do whatever you like, take a trip to the beach for example and there's a bus going from Sagres to Lagos for citytrips.
The food is mostly vegan and we eat many fruits. You will have 3 meals a day. We can respond to your eating habits as well...
Please notice that we don't smoke nor drink and don't allow drugs at our place. Families with kids over 4 years old are extra welcome!
Volunteers will -for safety reasons - not be required to do any high risk work like roofing or working in hights.
Looking forward to seeing you here!!

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We are a German family with up to 6 kids from 5 to 17. We have chicken, dogs and donkeys, fruit trees such as peaches, apples, pears, figs and citrus. What can you learn? How to build with clay, wood and stones, we concider ourselves as quite good at this stage, how to build raised beddings, plant trees and how to work with mulch. How to survive in Portugal. Lots of things really. Also you can learn German :)
Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Help
At the moment, it's a lot of preventative gardening. Mostly watering the fruit trees, maintaining the water supply and preparing beddings for the plants. Also some grafting can be done soon.

We use a compost toilet and water is limited. You will sleep in a clayhouse, where we have two guest rooms. We offer breakfast, lunch and dinner and expect about 4 hours a day help. Electricity we have from solar panels. Everything is negotiable
What else ...
We are approximately 8 km from the beach. The next one is called Boca do Rio and it takes about 30 minutes to reach it by bike. About 15 minutes by foot it is to the swimming lake. Otherwise possibilities are hiking and enjoying nature.
About 5 km it is to the next Shopping possibility - the Intermarché in Budens.
In Barão de São Miguel is a café and a Minimercado.
Normally we go to the market in Vila do Bispo once a week to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. This town has also Aldi and Lidl and some other shops and cafés.A little more information

It was great to have you here, after a few words you always were able to work solitary at the construction site and in the garden, you were always friendly and relaxed and it was a pleasure to see you acting with the kids, there we could learn a lot, thanks for this and everything! You are always welcome!

it was always fun to work together, you did a lot of beautiful claywork and we appreciated your incredible talent in arts. You planted trees really with care and we liked your calm and friendly character and lovely way to talk to the kids, Spanish to Portuguese. You were having a lot of fun with the others always keeping the harmony in… read more

Usually we are not very big on rating but our time with Dave and his super fun little daughter (she definitely knows how to travel the galaxy because a towel is always at hand) was so great we had to make a exception.
We learned so much about off grid living, building and cooking. Dave really took time for us and gave us a… read more
