Hi there, we are Rich & Eve, a couple from England, who are passionate about making meaningful contributions through work-exchange programs.
Currently, we are on a Canadian Working Holiday Visa, after landing in October 2025. At the moment we are on a help-exchange, living at a vegan animal sanctuary called Promised Land in Campbellford, Ontario. We plan to continue sustaining our travels through a combination of paid work, help-exchanges and pet-/house-sitting. We are specifically looking to help projects that align with our ethos and values regarding veganism, environmentalism, sustainability, humble living, and compassion for all beings with whom we share this planet.
I, Rich, consider myself to be curious, tolerant, open-minded, patient and understanding.
I'm well aware of life's unpredictability, how much there is out there to learn (no matter my age), and how preciously short life is.
I thoroughly enjoy learning about science, nature, wildlife, psychology, human relations, food/cooking/baking, nutrition, language, paleoanthropology and a multitude of other topics - of which there are many, many more to discover!
Experiencing how different people live and how different cultures view life is very intriguing to me. It's so intriguing, in fact, that I hope to continually travel throughout my life to experience this firsthand or continue to read about/watch documentaries about how others view life and how they live.
Open-mindedness, tolerance of others' opinions - providing they are not causing people harm - and a willingness to try to understand others, I believe, are crucial to connecting positively with other people. These are traits that I want to further put to the test, expand and hone throughout my life; I mainly hope to improve these through work-exchanges and travel.
Back in the UK I earned a living by privately teaching students about maths and science, helping them to pass their exams or re-sit exams.
In my free time I enjoy reading, watching a diverse range of documentaries, playing badminton or football, hiking, exploring nature, taking photographs, cooking or baking, playing board/card games with friends and family, pet-/house-sitting with Eve, alongside many other things that I'm yet to discover.
I, Eve, am vegan and very passionate about animal rights. I love caring for both humans and animals and find being in service to others especially fulfilling. I'm an introvert at heart who values both stillness and solitude, as well as community and connection with others. I believe that the small simple things in life are often the big things. One of my favourite moments in the morning is practising yoga/meditation followed by a cup of tea!
I'm a very practical person and find tasks from which I can see tangible progress very satisfying. I love being in nature, hiking, yoga, meditation, reading, running, cooking, baking, taking photographs, and arts and crafts. I would describe myself as a curious and open-minded person, always eager to grow, expand my knowledge and develop new skills. One of the ways I seek to do this is by trying new things (pushing myself out of my comfort zone), reading, watching documentaries and listening/learning from others.
I am very interested in psychology, mental wellbeing and personal development. I value creating and being part of an environment in which people can feel seen, heard and supported. My own wellbeing journey led me to pursue counselling which I was in the early stages of studying; I plan to continue this on my return to the UK. Alongside my studies - before our current working holiday visa - I was working part-time as a self-employed cleaner/dog walker.

Rich's Experiences:
WORK EXPERIENCE
- Before finishing university and within the year after graduating, I have worked as a bartender, forestry labourer, labourer, and kitchen assistant.
- I've also worked at the school that I was taught at as an unqualified maths teacher, after being hired by the teacher who taught me maths at A-level (14th December 2017 - 20th July 2018). This position involved teaching maths to 11 to 14 year olds as a temporary unqualified teacher for a maternity cover.
- After that, I worked as a mobile domiciliary (in-their-home) care worker (September 2018 - June 2019). As a mobile care worker I drove between customer's homes and helped them with many aspects of daily life including: helping with personal hygiene; preparing meals; cleaning and tidying; shopping; taxiing; administering medication; and providing companionship, along with many more. During my time here I received an award for 'person-centred care' in which I was highlighted for my tailoring of needs for each customer. I also received the 'carer of the month' for my last month in the role. This job required a lot of trust to enter customers' homes, usually using key codes; respect for dignity and privacy; empathy to try and understand certain conditions; and good time-keeping to get all the jobs done for one client whilst being able to get to the next customer on time.
- To see if I wanted to work with younger children, I worked as a summer camp counsellor in New York State, USA, via the Camp America program (22nd June - 30th August 2019). For two full months I was a camp counsellor for 5-7 year olds that were in groups of up to 16 children. I would share this group with one or two other co-counsellors. During these months I had learnt quickly to communicate using simpler language with the children; reassure children who were either missing home or it was their first time at camp; address behavioural issues between campers; get the campers to where they needed to be across camp on time; and help teach activities such as boating, sports, and archery with the specialists. The biggest challenge was adapting to their needs in emotional support, packing/searching bags, applying sun cream/insect repellent, usually with more than one asking at the same time!
- Since returning from America I looked after my grandma in the mornings, who was showing the first signs of dementia, and, alongside this, also became a private maths tutor in the evenings (October 1st, 2019 - Present). My grandma was eventually moved to a professional care home and I continued to tutor full-time.
- Since A-level I have enjoyed learning and applying maths. This passion of mine involves time-management by arranging and communicating dates via phone or email with parents; being respectful and polite in the student's own home; creating a respectful and professional but relaxed relationship with the student(s) to help them achieve their best; and tailoring each session to the student(s), often creating personalised material. Since starting as a tutor, I have helped at least 40 students pass their maths, and I hope to help many more pass.
VOLUNTEER/WORK-EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE
- Voluntary Traineeship with the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (27th February - 2nd August 2017): During this placement I spent three days a week gaining practical skills by working with a Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Field Officer. I covered nature reserves within North Yorkshire plus a few reserves in the Yorkshire Dales. During this traineeship I have learnt skills including fence/gate repairs, boardwalk/bridge construction, concrete foundation building, using a brushcutter/mower, volunteer management and many more.
- WWOOFing in America: During the month after the summer camp had finished, I volunteered at a couple's home, Jennifer and Michael's, who lived at the lovely-named Sunshine House (because it WAS painted yellow!). Here they grew their own organic vegetables and fruits, harvested and processed them for the autumn and winter, and went out foraging for mushrooms whenever they could. During my time with J and M, I removed undesired plants from lots of different beds; harvested peaches and cooked them before vac-packing them; picked cherry tomatoes before drying them out in the oven to store long-term; and went mushroom foraging with the couple. I was there with a friend who I met at camp and, because J and M trusted us enough, they took us both to an ashram in the Catskill mountains where I cut back fig trees, put in fence posts, tended to the flowerbeds and attended morning and evening yoga classes.
- WWOOFing in the UK: In the UK, I have volunteered at a couple's home where a woman, Scarlett, worked for the organisation WWOOF as the coordinator for the UK. The hosts, Scarlett and Philip, had this to say about me:
"Rich stayed with us for 2 months and in that time we found him to be a kind, reliable, respectful and agreeable house guest. He was certainly competent in the tasks he did and is someone we're sure would resonate with the phrase 'if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing properly!' We valued his orderly and scientific mind, and it was very helpful to have him joining in thinking through more complex jobs. He was also quietly thoughtful and open to immersing himself in the broader learning experience, and we think he probably got a lot out of his stay because of this trait. In short, Rich was very easy to live with and an asset to have around - thoroughly recommended and we'd love to see him back here any time."
The following summer I returned to help S and P out for 3 further weeks. This time I mainly worked on painting some caravans and restoring a cellar that has been damaged by rats. The summer after that, in 2024, I returned again for another 2 weeks to help with the hay harvest and help with general maintenance of the smallholding.

Eve's Experiences:
WORK EXPERIENCE
At university I studied Animal Welfare & Society. After 2 years, I decided to change direction and went on to do a Working Holiday Visa in New Zealand where I ended up living for almost 3 years (including over the Covid pandemic).
During this time, I undertook various different jobs, including working as a kiwi picker and kumara plant sorter. I also worked as a housekeeper at a hotel. In this role I was responsible for cleaning bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and communal living spaces. My duties entailed: vacuuming and mopping floors, dusting surfaces, scrubbing and removing stains from carpets, changing bed linen and making beds, washing and drying laundry, collecting and disposing of waste appropriately, upholding security procedures, reporting any damages and safety issues to management, and handing in lost guest items to reception.
Since coming back to the UK, after working in another hotel, I decided to use my housekeeping skills and experience of working with animals to set up my own self-employed cleaning and dog walking business. This involved effective time management, clear communication and a great deal of trust on behalf of my clients who relied on me to let myself into their homes and treat their pets and property with the respect, care and dignity that they deserve.
VOLUNTEER/WORK-EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE
- Pet sitting: As well as caring for my friends’ 2 dogs in Sweden a couple of times, I have also had the privilege to look after many other wonderful animals, meet new people and explore different areas through the websites House Sitters UK/NZ. In total, I’ve now been on 15 pet sits, including 6 together with Rich (I’ve got him hooked). If you’d like to see my/our reviews, please see this link: https://www.housesittersuk.co.uk/house-sitter-pet-sitter/260645/compassionate-care-for-your-companions#reviews.
- Work-exchanges in the UK: I lived and worked as a volunteer at Duster’s Ark animal sanctuary on and off during the weekends and holidays over the course of my university studies. It was incredible to work alongside like-minded people with a vegan ethos. At one point I was trusted with the responsibility to single-handedly temporarily run the sanctuary for a few days. This involved caring for around 60 animals as well as training a new volunteer. As an animal caretaker I was involved in the daily animal feeding and cleaning routines, monitoring the animals for signs of ill health and abnormal behaviour, attending vet visits and administering oral medications. This was my first volunteer experience at a vegan animal sanctuary, which fuelled my passion to go on to do work-exchanges at six other vegan sanctuaries.
- Work-exchanges in NZ: I have had the privilege of living with three different families in NZ, including staying at a tiny house, which was so tiny that I slept in a tent outside. Here are the reviews from the families that I stayed with. The first two are taken from my WWOOFING NZ account and the third from my Workaway account (happy to send screenshots of these if wanted):
"We had the absolute pleasure of hosting this wonderful young woman for 4 months. She was a delight to have around in every way. She is considerate and tidy and just fit right in. Olive is kind and gentle and is also a fantastic helper; she was always eager to learn new things and give everything a go. She is a totally reliable worker who works well with others and can also work unsupervised without hesitation as Olive has plenty of initiative and commonsense and can be relied upon to complete the work she starts; whether it is gardening, mucking out horse paddocks, splitting firewood with the hydraulic splitter, sanding and painting the house or house chores inside. Olive also cooked us many a delicious vegan meal for which we are very grateful. We totally loved hosting her and couldn't have wished for a lovelier woofer to join us during the Covid19 lockdown period. We would welcome her back with open arms anytime!!!" – 2020
“Olive stayed with us for a number of weeks in early 2020. She was a total joy to have around - kind, considerate, thoughtful and present with a great sense of humour! Her application to any task that we needed her to do was unfailingly thorough, applying herself determinedly, with great energy and a positive attitude - and she was always eager to learn why we might do things a particular way. Her communication was also great which we appreciated and she was kind and happy to be crazy with my two children :-) I can't recommend Olive highly enough as a wwoofer, and as a 'house guest' - her company was a joy and we hope very much she'll return to us for another stay - whether wwoofing or not. An honourary part of our whanau (family) now! Safe and happy travels :-)” - 2020
“Eve (Olive) is a great worker and a lovely house guest. She adores animals and was always eager to tend to the chooks (chickens) and pigs. She also did a little fencing, carpentry, adobe building, gardening, mulching, and lots of cooking. Then she went out training for a half marathon. I'd have her back any time. Eve is enjoyable to have around. She has a quiet nature but always asks for info on how to do any task well. All the best on your journey!” - 2021
- The Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary: Over my time in NZ I lived as a volunteer at Black Sheep for a total of 4 months. As well as the animal caretaking duties, I was also involved in helping to trim the goats’ and sheep’s hooves, cleaning the volunteer house, cooking for up to 9 volunteers and volunteering in the Sanctuary’s Opportunity for Animals charity shops (greeting customers, answering enquiries, selling items over the counter, sorting stock and arranging displays).
- The Loft Yoga Lounge (NZ): I lived and worked at a Bhakti Yoga ashram in Auckland for around 3 months. Here I was immersed in a completely different way of life. I have so much respect and admiration for the devotees, who embraced me as a part of their community. At The Loft (their yoga lounge) I would help to tidy, clean and set up the space for their events (including yoga classes, talks and kirtan sessions). I was also involved in preparing and serving food to guests. One of my most memorable experiences includes getting up early to start preparing hundreds of pakoras to sell to students at Auckland University’s campus to raise money for the organisation. I was involved in helping to write their weekly newsletter and social media posts to advertise their events. I also helped them to run one of their wellbeing retreats, taking photographs of the venue before the event to inform the future participants.
- Internship in Colombia: My passion for yoga led me to do a 200-hour hatha Yoga Teacher Training course at Flying Tree (Medellín, Colombia) in 2023. Following this, I did a month’s internship at the studio in which I practised structuring, planning and delivering yoga classes to our cohort and the public. This is an area I am keen to further explore and develop in the future.
- Other Work-exchanges include: The Sacred Earth Retreat (NZ); Te Paranui Animal Sanctuary & Permaculture Homestead (NZ); The Animal Sanctuary (NZ); Fat Cat Hostel (NZ); My Lovely Pig Rescue (Ireland); Muckeles Farm (Animal Sanctuary in Germany); Fundación El Hogar (Animal Sanctuary in Spain).
