Description
Everyone can relate to the sensation of time flying faster with every passing year. Though I know there is no way around it, I have found that only music and travel seem to slow down time. With this realization, I have decided to spend as much time exploring the world as I can with the time that I have.

I spent four months traveling around Europe this past year. Along the way, I discovered that I was not drawn to the cities or the sights. The real joy in travel is cultural immersion, which is best experienced in small towns and villages far off the tourist trail. This makes work exchange opportunities the most priceless windows into real worlds that would otherwise go unnoticed.

As cliche as it may sound, music is the universal language. Music is also my passion, so I travel with my guitar and have been continuously blessed by the unique social interactions that it seems to attract. I am also TEFL certified and find teaching English and sharing language among the most rewarding parts of my life and the easiest access to sincere cultural exchange.

Above all, I am on a mission to see the world outside of the cities. I am eager to share laughter with strangers in languages I do not understand, to share songs that bring everyone together, to teach English, learning even more in the process, and to experience the world through the unique lens of the common man. If any of this resonates with you, I would love to visit your corner of the world.

I am recently TEFL certified and hoping to gain valuable experience teaching along the way in my travels. Though I have yet to conduct a class, I have experience babysitting and working with children.
I am handy with tools and general fixes, having spent a couple years refinishing cabinets and restoring houses with my father.
I have worked in various restaurants and have plenty experience with customer service.
I am a multi-instrumentalist, mainly playing guitar and the drums for over a decade. I am not formally trained, but more than competent to teach others the basics of a desired instrument.

My time in the picturesque Glen of Aherlow was a profound moment in time that is truly difficult to put into words. If you’re like me, reading through the reviews is the most important factor in deciding where to go. The reviews for this workaway were so consistently positive and glowing that the opportunity to experience it for myself felt like a… read more genuine privilege. If only I knew how special it really would be, I would have shuffled my plans around to stay even longer.

I was only able to stay for two weeks, but that brief time was a period of my travels that I will treasure forever. To start, Fionntáin is the host of all hosts. He has been doing it for so long, has seen it all, and has all the kinks figured out to ensure a perfectly calculated balance of work, social interaction, and general accommodation. Fionntáin possesses the sort of timeless wisdom that is a gift to encounter, not far from an Irish Dalai Lama. He is also very good at keeping volunteers fed, looking out for their needs and interests, and above all maintaining a productive and optimistic outlook that is pleasantly infectious. He is a pleasure to work with, refreshing to talk to, and a treasure trove of spiritual and practical knowledge.

The work is catered to what you are interested in and best suited to perform. I arrived with the expectation of crafting some wooden joists for the dance pavilion, but the fluidity of this project led me to focus my time on preparing different bits of lumber for aesthetic purposes instead. I never once felt overworked, and when the day would come to an end around 4 pm, the freedom to explore or relax was a pleasure. This place is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the urban landscape. I had been backpacking all over Europe for 3 months before I arrived, so the ability to slow down and reflect in such a place was perfect.

Aside from the day-to-day experiences, my time was filled with some noteworthy mundane pleasures that I feel compelled to share. Things like the open-air toilet and shower were daunting at first, but now, looking back, I sincerely miss the calming sight of the clouds rolling over the Galtee mountains while I washed up in the evening. The area is tucked away in a very small town that can be covered in a short walk. The locals are wonderful, and like most small towns, the social center is the pub. My last night here was spent in Moroney’s with locals telling stories, reciting poems and songs, and experiencing what felt like the most authentic Irish experience one could ask for.

If you are even considering it, I urge you to go. This workaway exists on sacred land, and the whole experience felt like a dream. I was lucky to have a couple of other volunteers to interact with, but this location is the perfect place to focus inward and celebrate solitude. I wish Fionntáin and any future volunteers all the best, as there is much work to be done. I cannot wait to return someday to help realize this vision and see the finished product.
