Hi there! :) I am on a trip via land from Europe to Japan and back, a once in a life opportunity which is expanding my horizons by leaps and bounds every day, helping me discover something new about the world and myself.
What brings me joy? Being in nature, yoga, taking photos, slow travelling, having unexpected connections with people, food.
What motivates me? The feeling of contributing to something good, best if it involves & mixes up nature/sustainability/creativity/communities. Small but meaningful actions can go a long way.

Learning a language not only expands one’s opportunities to connect more easily and more meaningfully with more people, but also expands one’s ability to think about the world as we understand and interpret the world through our language and the categories it provides. And even when one manages to learn just a few words, learning those few words is an invaluable tool to get a better insight into a new culture, a new country.

I have plenty of experience in customer service, having worked a lot in hospitality and customer facing capacities. I have also organisational skills developed whilst working for a festival and as an account manager.
I don’t mind getting my hard dirty as back home I ma used to help out in the family orchard back home where we grow our veggies.
I also am quite good with crafts and anything that might revolve around that because of my hobbies

I spent a little over two weeks in Danyang and what a lovely experience it was with Monica and her family!
Monica accepted a quite last minute request from mine and from the very first moment we got in touch, she was super responsive and incredibly helpful. Once I had arrived, it was super easy to find the guesthouse she runs and where I had my… read more own room, which comes with AC and a private bathroom - such a treat, especially after so many months spent from one hostel to the next!
There is also a shared kitchen in the lobby which allowed me to cook for myself.
To make sure the workawayers’ stay is as comfortable as possible, Monica also shared a list of recommended places where to eat (also highlighting vegetarian or veggie-friendly premises, which was highly appreciated), attractions, and local amenities such as the pool, the library (do visit, it’s incredible!) and a free gym.

The required workload was absolutely manageable, agreed on as soon as I arrived and it left me plenty of time to explore Danyang, and further afield on my days off.
The actual task was spending with the children at the Kids Cafe, coming up with games and activities, teaching them English whilst playing with them. I spent time with Monica’s daughters and one of their friends, a couple of local children and a teenage boy over the weekend, and a girl who was staying at the guesthouse. Although the children were (understandably) a bit shy at the beginning, they all were happy to participate in the activities I suggested them and just needed a bit of time to get used to me. I also had the chance to meet for a few times a lovely lady who runs a shop downtown and is looking to have some small chats to improve her English.
Ah, and how not to mention Bonnie, a guesthouse team member: I would start almost all my days with a lovely chat with her :)

I had a lovely time there, it felt like a home away from home, and although I didn’t know Danyang before I found this workaway, I am glad I did get there: spending time with the children can be a lot of fun, locals are friendly, the place is surrounded by beautiful nature and it’s quite easy to reach from Seoul, just a lovely countryside town with a lively market and an enjoyably slow pace of life.
But more than anything Monica was an incredibile host: warm, helpful, flexible and always happy to share a chat!

Thank you Monica, I truly had a great time with you and your family in Danyang!
Hopefully our paths will cross again in the future
