Hellooo there! My name is Shannon, nice to meet you! A little about me, I currently work as an Operations Manager for a tour company based on Koh Rong Sanloem, Cambodia. While I love my job, I am most passionate about teaching. I currently online tutor a past student that I had in my class two years ago twice a week. I have decided to spend my holiday volunteering so that I can enjoy the wonders of teaching again as well as furthering my knowledge of sustainability. I would like to learn more about sustainability methods that different cultures practice so that I may take them back to the village that I live in. I would also like to take my learned knowledge and work within our company to educate our staff about the importance of sustainable practices.
When I travel I enjoy becoming fully immersed in the local culture. I want to learn your language, sample the local cuisine, and partake in any events, if I am allowed as a foreigner.
My hobbies include reading, taking online classes, and I love all outdoor activities! (Minus anything involving caves, but that is a fear that I am working through)
I have lived in Southeast Asia for the past three years and have loved every moment of it. I have spent time in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and now Cambodia. What a cool experience volunteering at this farm was! I enjoyed being able to interact with the animals, learn about the farm, and enjoyed many conversations with Farmer Seng.
Here's an overview of my experience:
I was picked up by Farmer Seng at the bus station and taken to a delicious dinner of different Chinese dishes. My first day of work… read more was running errands with Seng and getting to explore a bit of the surrounding area. The rest of the time my work varied from helping out with odds and ends and doing some painting projects.
My overall experience was very pleasant and I am grateful to have had this experience. Everyone at the farm was always very welcoming and kind.

Some info for future volunteers:
The accommodation is a treehouse. Bed linen is provided, but you will need to bring your own towel, toiletries, & toilet paper. There is no hot water or air con, but the cool water and fan are perfect for the climate here! Your neighbors (monkeys) are adorable but can be a bit rambunctious in the morning, if you're a light sleeper, I'd bring ear plugs for your comfort.
The daily schedule is as follows (approximately).
You will work 6 hours a day, 6 days a week and receive one day off:
8:30-9: breakfast - typically Farmer Seng will bring this for you from the city.
9-12:30 morning work
12:30-1 lunch (you will eat together with the other volunteers, sometimes helping with preparation and of course helping with cleaning up)
1-2: rest time
2-5: afternoon work
After five you have free time for the rest of the evening, there is a tower nearby that you can walk to, which offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. You will be on your own for dinner most nights. Farmer Seng will buy you vegetables, rice, and noodles for you to prepare your dinner. The closest town is about half an hour by car so there is no grab or delivery services available.
Saturday, Sundays, and Public Holidays can be quite a bit busier than the week days, so you might not be able to have rest time or a break. That being said the work is not strenuous at all, you just need to be around if guests come so that you can let one of the guides know.
There's no wifi, but Celecom Digi worked perfectly for me the entire time I was here. I'd recommend bringing lightweight long pants, long sleeve shirts, closed toed shoes, and socks - the mosquitoes can be a bit vicious at times. Make sure to bring a hat & sunscreen, when the sun is shining it is bright and beautiful! Be prepared to have your picture taken A LOT and to be the star of the farm's Facebook while you are here.
