  • Description

    Namaste,
My name is Valerie and I’m 20 years old girl from the Czech Republic.

Since I was younger, I always longed to know who I am, from joining the Christian community, through meditation and reading spiritual books, ending by…the realisation that I’M nothing more or nothing less than a free being flowing in the process of re-remembering where I actually came from.
Among the activities in which I feel most like myself include running, travelling, reading, doing yoga, painting, singing, playing in a theatre, spending time with my nearest and many more.
Last year I started studying Religions, Philosophy and Ethics at Bath Spa University in England. However, since that time I haven’t felt like I was really learning anything. The lectures were too vague, and it was usually just me and the teacher who attended the seminars. After a long time of not admitting the idea of withdrawing from my studies (because of what would family, friends and people around me think) I finally decided to do it. To make such a big step and a big change in my life which I have been afraid of before. But that's what learning and getting out of the comfort zone is all about, right? Anyway, my plan is to continue studying from abroad, from the Czech Republic and start studying at another university in Prague.

My first Workaway experience was in a holistic yoga community in the middle of absolutely nowhere in Denmark when I was 18 years old. My main task was preparing vegan meals together with the basic maintenance.
My second workaway experience was in the year 2022 in Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands (Spain). I was having one of the best three-week experience while restoring la finca (farm) with other international volunteers. We were living really modest- out of running water, shower, toilet and electricity. The main intention of this project was to be as ecological and sustainable as possible with respect to the surrounding nature. Our daily tasks included painting, planting together with the basic maintenance.

Besides that, I work as a barista/waitress in a café for 4 years where I was promoted to be a shift manager. To keep everything going, full concentration, thoroughness, reliability and efficiency were required. During my school years, I also volunteered at the local hospital. This job included visiting elderly people and making their often-mundane days brighter by either going for a walk or playing games with them. This experience brought me a lot of understanding, patience, empathy and gratitude for my health and freedom. One of my most wonderful memories is the weeks spent as a voluntary trainee at a camp for children with mental disabilities organized by teachers from the Waldorf school. Taking care of children with Down’s Syndrome was, without any doubt, demanding and requiring a lot of responsibility but in return, I have never received so much love.
