  • Description

Hey I'm Tom! I was lucky enough to be born and raised in Kenya, on the shores of the beautiful lake Nivasha. My earliest memories are of looking for snakes and chameleons with my dad and being chased by a hippo in my mums car! I moved to the equally beautiful south of Ireland (Cork) when I was 6 and spent a LOT of time on walks in the woods and looking for cool and interesting things on the beach. I have also lived in France and Spain and have travelled quite a bit.

...In other words, I'm mad about nature, adventure, learning new things and meeting new people!

I'm also motivated by making positive social and environmental impact. I have done lots of work with social justice and environmental groups and in 2024, I started an online youth-led solutions journalism platform called Mangrove Report, which showcases inspiring organisations that are helping to solve the world's most urgent problems (check it out!). Helping people to learn about the problems that we face and what can and is being done to solve them is something that brings me great purpose. One of the things that I want to gain from Workaways is a deeper knowledge and understanding of different food systems and building methods. I believe that what we eat and where we live is really important and, if done right, can have enormous positive benefits for us as individuals, communities and the planet!

  • More details about your skills

I am very driven and motivated - I recently completed a degree in History and Politics at Trinity College Dublin. I have a passion for languages - I speak fluent English (obviously) and French (but need to practice), and I speak good Spanish and quite good Swahili and Irish. I have worked in lots of bar and restaurants, so I know what hard work is like (finishing clean up at 4am regularly!). I am very into fitness (running, yoga and gym) and since I was small, I have played loads of sports, including rugby, karate, sailing, surfing, skiing, boxing, football and tennis. I have worked on farms in France (my first job was on a tomato farm when I was 15), Colombia (permaculture farms in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains) and Ireland (a beef and dairy farm in County Waterford) - so I have a good knowledge of different types and methods of farming. I have two younger brothers and I am the eldest of 14 cousins. I was always on babysitting duty growing up (I still am) - so I know how to look after kids! I have cystic fibrosis and need to take care of what I eat, so I have picked up pretty good cooking skills over the years - I can cook nice, healthy and cheap food for small or big groups (my speciality is Indian food).

I think my biggest skill though is the fact that I love learning new things!

Cats unfortunately. I can be around them, but I just cannot have them in my bedroom or sleeping area : (

    • Special dietary requirements
I have cystic fibrosis which means that I require extra calories (about 30-40% more than average), but I have special calorie shakes and I am very used to buying my own eggs and cheese for extra calories. Anywhere that I have worked or travelled, I have n
