Madeira, Portugal - from Jul 2024 until Aug 2024 View allDescription
Hi! My name is Theresa, I'm a 21-year-old law student from Czechia looking forward to her first Workaway adventure this summer ☀️
My plans of taking a gap year to travel between high school and university were unfortunately halted by covid-19 so now I want to at least use the summer vacation for something else than soul-sucking corporate jobs.
I spent one semester (autumn 2022) living and studying abroad in the Netherlands, which was an experience that gave me more than I ever imagined it could. I made friends from different parts of the world, managed to move my life to an unknown evironment and then continue to study and work there for 4 months. I learned new things about myself too and would love to grow and get more experiences this summer too.
At first sight I might seem very calm and introverted but don't be fooled, once you get to know me a little bit more you'll find out that I'm passionate about many things - nature (my current fascination are fungi), taking care of plants (both indoor and outdoor ones), cooking, all kinds of arts (I paint, write or try to better my photography skills almost every day), animals (I have a beautiful dog named Alaska that I love to death) and many more. I strive to be a better person every day than I was the day before and I belive that I'm a kind, honest, hard-working, self-sufficient and reliable human.
I've had several part-time jobs in the past 6 years, such as serving guests and preparing coffee in a café, cooking in a restaurant, a fast-food, working at the Christmas market selling hot beverages, working in retail, housekeeping and cleaning service in hotels and resorts, being a tour guide at an old monastery and museum and working as a paralegal in a law firm. I showed up to all of these jobs responsibly and as my best self which allowed me to learn a lot from my bosses, colleagues and the work itself.Interests

Some of the areas I believe I'm skilled in but regardless would love to learn more about if given the opportunity are:
COOKING
I learned to cook from the very best - my grandma, who was a professional cook before retirement and taught me from a very young age. I cook for myself every day and love to use fresh and quality ingredients, try new cuisines and recipes and invite friends over for dinners.
GARDENING
Just being outside makes my day and when I can bury my hands in dirt it's ten times better. I tend to our garden at home and together with my mum grow lots of fruits, vegetables and herbs every year (sometimes even mushrooms in our cellar!) I also love flowers and decorative indoor plants and know how to take care of them.
CLEANING & HOUSEKEEPING
Apart from liking to keep my own room and house clean and tidy, I also have experience with working as a cleaner and housekeeper in hotels and resorts. Every place I've worked at had a slightly different procedure but I know all the basics and am very detail-oriented when it comes to cleaning.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
This sounds like a no-brainer to people who have never worked with customers, but to remain pleasant, kind and professional even when faced with someone who's had an unfortunate day is a skill. I always try to help people solve their problems and make their days better, even if just by saying a few kind words. In the end, being nice to others makes me feel better too.
CHILD CARE
As the eldest daughter I was always involved in taking are of my two younger sisters. At the age of 17 I started working as a camp counselor in the summers, mostly working with children aged 8-16 for several summers. I also spent some time volunteering and tutoring a girl from a socio-economically disadvantaged family. I have very close personal experience with ADHD, autistic and in general neurodivergent children and people. (It needs to be noted that I do not have much experience with caring for very small children - infants and young toddlers.) I´m a big believer in doing everything with love but when working with children, it´s twice as important. I´m attentive, always kind and love to entertain curiosity and play.
_______
Apart from these few highlighted areas, I also have a little bit of experience with almost everything. I was a very curious child and would not rest until getting answers and experience, so I took up many hobbies (such as horse-riding, archery or photo-editing) and did some projects on my own (like designing and building a chicken coop, making my own clay bowl from dirt or milling flour).
As the old saying goes - a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one. There are many things that I have some degree of knowledge of, which (I believe) makes me a fast learner and a good helper in all different kinds of work.Age

Already during the interview she showed that she is well organized. We really appreciated her helpfulness and flexibility.
