  • Description

    Hey there!

I'm Scott, and my passion in life is traveling and using what skills and knowledge I have to give back where I can! I've traveled fairly extensively throughout southeast Asia, south and central America, and west Africa, where in each place I visit I have used workaway (or similar) to volunteer. My favorite experiences are those that are off the beaten path, where I am able to get a good understanding of what life is like in other cultures.

My upbringing and travels spurred a strong desire to steward healthy relationships with the environment and what I have based my career around! I have BS and MS degrees in natural resources and forest ecology, have worked as a forest ecologist and climate change coordinator for the US Forest Service, and researched the effects of fire on forest ecosystems. Likewise, I served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal, where I was promoting improved agroforestry practices to benefit community health and well-being. Underlying all of these professional pursuits has been a desire for connection; my connection with the people and places I'm traveling to, connection between society and the environment, and connection between cultures.

My personal passions include playing volleyball, reading, baking, camping, hiking, and anything else that satisfies the adventurous spirit! I've recently become obsessed with the idea of sailing as a form of travel, but have yet to gain experience, so that is my primary motivation currently! Other than that, my main goals are to meet amazing people, have unforgettable experiences, and learn more about myself and the world around me!

  • More details about your skills

Specialized skills: tree and plant identification and forest survey methods; backcountry navigation; tree and plant nursery propagation; pruning, grafting, and maintaining trees for fruit production and health; analyzing soil characteristics and promoting improved soil health practices; R coding for data and spatial analyses; digital mapping; Microsoft office applications; other natural resource/ecology related skills. I have experience teaching advanced natural resources topics and have exceptional written and verbal professional communication competencies. Also, I have a modest amount of experience with audio and video editing software.

General skills: I am quite handy and have volunteered working on several construction projects as well as home remodeling and vehicle maintenance, in addition to growing up learning related skills. I'm a great problem solver and enjoy working hard, so I getting to work on projects that are building or maintaining something is always something that I'm excited about. I've volunteered fairly extensively with youth organizations, so the skills associated with providing safe and educational environments are something I've learned over time, along with generally striving to be a positive role model and leader.

Certifications: I'm a certified Wilderness First Responder, which carries CPR certification and Epinephrine Auto-injector certifications as well.
