  • Description

Hello and thank you for reading our profile!

We are a family from Prague, Czech Republic, who love nature and new adventures (but also good food, music and quiet moments when time just flows freely). We – Sara and Jiri – have two lively and incredibly funny daughters: Lara, who has just turned 3, and Ida, who will be 1 year old in August. They are our buddies and are happiest when we are all together. We are taking roughly a month this summer to spend time together in nature, working, getting to know new sustainable ways of life and offering our hands and time to something real.

Why do we want to volunteer as workawayers?

We both have traveled a lot and believe that this is a way for us and now also our children to keep growing, learning and feeling tightly connected to the world. Our daughters love being included in whatever we do – and this is much easier if the work is physical rather than just mental and/or electronic. And they are sooo happy in nature.

In our city life, we try to live with respect to nature, animals and the planet, and slowly build a community around us. We are also part of a community garden, where we go a few times a week – it is wonderful to plant and watch delicious things grow together with the kids and our neighbors. Both of us adults have experience with farm work and similar, and want to reconnect to it (more info in the "Skills" section below).

As people, we like to think we are quite easy going, with a positive, active attitude, flexible (even more so with the kids!) and love to learn new things. By profession, Sara is a translator and Jiri an audio documentary-maker. We both speak very good English and collectively we can get by in Spanish and German.

We are super interested in exploring ways to build community and create our own small systems, would love to see real-world examples of barter exchange, self-sufficient communities, childcare sharing…

We both (Sara especially as it's her profession) love languages - the open doors into other cultures, ways of living in this world... We can help with English or of course with Czech, if anyone is interested! :)) A language as beautiful as it is annoying to learn <3

Both of us have experience with farm work and similar, and want to reconnect to it! Jiri grew up spending his summers working on his grandmother’s self-sustaining farm - planting, weeding, harvesting, also some bee-keeping with his beloved grandfather... Sara spent a bunch of time helping out on her friends‘ house with a large permaculture garden (weeding, watering, pruning, as well as harvesting, drying/sorting seeds, shelling beans, pressing apples for juice etc… in spring even collecting and removing millions of slugs by hand – if you want proof of my dedication to eco-gardening!) and a bunch of animals (a wonderful big dog, a gorgeous cat, some rabbits, maybe 20 chickens, a couple of geese). She also did some WWOOFing on a vineyard in Chile and a few other volunteering projects of a similar nature – building dry stone walls, helping a friend build his cob house, co-leading an international team of volunteers renovating a multi-purpose arts/theater space…, always coming out of them feeling peaceful, happy and enriched.

In the last few years, we have been going to a friends‘ countryside house with a big garden, where we housesit and take care of their cats and sheep, which Lara absolutely loves – seeing her thrive there is part of what makes us so excited to take the kids on a Workaway trip.
