  • Description

    Hi everyone!

We are Ricardo and Mar, a portuguese couple that just decided to leave temporarily their 9-5 jobs and go into a sabbatical to do some slow traveling around the world. We are entering our 30s and we think there is still so much we want to do, to learn and to explore.

Our plan is to use volunteering opportunities to have longer stays far from home, to meet new people, to develop skills that we never would be able to develop seating in an office in a big city and to be in places that will make us enjoy even more this planet we live in.

These past years we have both been invested on our professional careers - as software engineer (Ricardo) and as financial controller (Mar). We met and started dating 3 years ago, we now live together and use every holiday we get to travel (even if just for one day trip in our country) and to explore our passions.

And which passions are those? The big one is really traveling: getting to know new cultures, new ways of living, new food, etc. But that is not all. Recently we discovered our love for hiking, camping, nature and the search for the most incredible landscapes.

If you are wondering, we also have some hobbies that dont require leaving home or at least our town. When the weather is not so inviting outside we really enjoy putting some music, have a glass of wine (or any other cocktail we feel we want to try making) and get into a very focused session of cooking or boardgaming. We use every opportunity to turn up the fireplace to make it as cosier as possible. It would be even nicer to have a bit of snow falling outside but we dont have that in Portugal :)

In the last months we also got into some new hobbies. One of them is even giving us medals: finishing 10 km races. It has been such a fun challenge and a way of keeping our fitness levels together. We are also starting with gardening but we are far from considering ourselves experts and would appreciate any knowledge we can get to improve our skills.

And that leads us to this particular moment where we are dealing with the important question of "What do we want to do next in our life?". Our friends are buying their houses for the future, marrying, getting promotions at their jobs or investing on new businesses.

Although all those things seem really nice, we also feel that we dont want to commit to any of them before expanding our knowledge and our skills, slow down the pace and take the time to reflect on the life decisions that are ahead of us. To be able to do that we think we need to escape from our current routines in which we are surrounded by things that do not bring any value to our lives and sometimes are even toxic for our mental health.

Lately our best days were the ones in which we lived more simply and with less things. Either cooking a simple pasta while we are camping or doing a full-day hike just with our backpacks (with a sandwich for lunch).

We truly believe that here in Workaway we will find opportunities that go in that direction: real life experiences, usually nature connected. We are very happy to be starting this new journey, visiting new places, going outside our comfort zone and learning so many new things!

  • More details about your skills

To be honest, we are still very inexperienced with hands-on skills but we hope to change that in the upcoming year.

We dont mind to get our hands dirty but our opportunities to do that here are not that much. We do some house keeping (cleaning, laundry, etc) in our own home, we are starting doing some limited gardening (we have a small terrace) and we also do some pet sitting (for Ricardo parents dog).

Outside of that, we have the associated knowledge to our jobs: economics (Mar as financial controller) and computer science (Ricardo as software engineer).

Regarding languages, our native language is Portuguese but we also write and speak English fluently.
