Hallo, I'm Robert-Jan and I come from Belgium.
My traveling bug started when I decided to go to New-Zealand for a year in 2016.
I was rather depressed in Belgium and quit college, fast forward a few months and voila! I made it to New-Zealand. I first stayed there with a family on a Sheep and Beef farm. They helped me out so much, thanks guys. Traveling certainly gave me the distraction I wanted and I soon forgot most of my worries.
I met many people most of which were lovely encounters. One of such encounter was with a Swedish bloke going by the name of Björn. He's an arborist in Sweden and he told me all about this Island he works on and offered me a job there.
We became friends and I took him up on his offer. I went to Sweden to work with him and his brother on the island of Hallands Väderö. I worked there for half a year and then turned my attention north.
There I fell in love with long distance hiking doing the St Olafs path in Norway . A pilgrim’s route from south to north covering 800km.
Having my hiking hitch scratched, for now, I was finally able fulfill a long live dream of mine to go to Canada. I got a working holiday visa and I stayed there with a lovely family for some time until I found a job in a Belgian chocolate factory (haha! very fitting). I traveled around the country for another three months. Alas my trip was cut short due to Covid.
At this point it is the height of the covid pandemic and I grew quite dissatisfied with life again. I was looking for something more. Whereas traveling in the past seemed to heal me I wanted to do something more.
Despite this, my hunger for adventure lead me to the path of Santiago de Compostela to do another Pilgrimage.
so I set out on July 2nd from my parents house and wandered Europe for a year and a half on foot. I lived out of my tent for most of this time and hiked for more than 6000km's and went all the way around the Iberian peninsula and eventually all the way back to Belgium This journey gave me a lot of time to think, contemplate and develop a hunger for spiritual development.
This lead me to India and South east Asia where I completely fell in love with the culture and the people. India was a wake up call to me that I actually know nothing about the world and that people have drastically different backgrounds than me. In
the land of smiles Thailand is where I completely lost my soul XD, what a beautiful country ! made even more beautiful by it's amazing people.
The next stage of my journey brings me to Australia with a third working holiday visa, where I hope to find a nice base to call my home away from home and from where to explore the country and find a potential place to work (I spent all my money in Asia haha).
I like to keep an open mind about most things in life. I think it's really important in our interactions with other people.
