Description
Hi, I’m Ollie - a 22 year old Australian with a big passion for culture, language and diverse hands-on experiences. Over the past few years I lived in Japan where the highlight of my time there was the many different volunteering experiences I had from farms to guesthouses. I'm looking to broaden my horizons now with Workaway and further explore what is truly out there. I always love trying something new and getting to meet new people all along the way!

At university I studied both Chinese Mandarin and Spanish. Unfortunately I have forgotten both these languages for the most part but my passion for language learning remains. I also studied Japanese at a private language school before going to live in Japan for 2 years. I now speak business level Japanese, and obtained a position at a Japanese company. I don't have any formal experience teaching a language, but am by no means opposed to it. Being Australian and an English native, I would happily teach English to people who would like to learn, as I know how difficult it can be learning another language. I'd also be happy to help teach Japanese if someone was interested,

I have quiet a variety of work and volunteer experience. When i lived in Japan I spent 6 months volunteering on farms, guesthouses and even a roof thatching company. I even spent 2 weeks volunteering in Korea.

As for work, I have worked in many customer service roles including a years worth of experience at a supermarket in Australia. I also worked for a hostel in Japan in Tokyo, as well as over two busy ski seasons. I also have experience working at a restaurant and behind a bar. My most recent employment has been a full time position at an Japan import company in Melbourne

I also recently graduated from university with a Bachelor of International Studies majoring in international relations, so i believe my cross-cultural communications skills are quite high and my world view is quite broad.

Oliver stayed my two farm .One is sheep farm at beginning .There he was helping sheep herding help daily routing.I think it was difficult at beginning but it takes week to get learn .
But he was one of best volunteer.
Other farm was cow farm experience was unique...

I volunteered on Minjee and her husband Altaa's farms between March - May 2026.

The first month I spent on Altaa's farm was probably the best way I could've experienced Mongolian herding culture. You will live in your own ger along with the other volunteers. The work can be quite full on with days where you can be working up to 12 hours or even… read more more. You are expected to get up quite early, and often don't finish until after sundown. This can mean at times dinner is also prepared quite late, which often means you're running on a lack of sleep. Altaa is incredibly friendly and clearly cares about all his volunteers that come, even when there can be a bit of a language barrier. However at times Altaa may suddenly need to run errands and you will find you have to run the farm and look after the animals all on your own (sometimes for a couple of days), which can being incredibly tiresome and sometimes frustrating. You will also most likely not have any days off. In spite of all this, you will learn to ride a horse within the first few days after you arrive, and will be responsible for herding the goats and sheep. Often you will be out for 6-7 hours a day herding on horseback, which really is a special experience. You should probably also note that there is very limited phone reception, power and no shower.

I spent the next month staying in a ger at Minjee's parents house in the town or Orkhon, my time here was incredibly chill in comparison to Altaa's, simply cleaning up around the property, sweeping horse and cow poo, feeding the animals and so on. Minjee's parents are also very friendly and kind, and Minjee's daughter Zaya would often visit, and help and supply me with whatever I needed.

And finally, in my last month we herded all the cows up to Minjee's summer house as the weather had become warmer. Minjee's summer house is in an incredibly beautiful location. We spent the mornings and evenings herding the cows, as well as doing other handywork tasks. Minjee is an incredibly lovely host. The other volunteers and I did find however that communication could be difficult at times as she would often leave us at the summer house for quite a few days on our own, and we found more often than we would be buying our own food in town.

Overall however, I would highly highly recommend Minjee as a host, you will have an incredibly culturally authentic time volunteering in Mongolia and make lots of amazing memories.
