  • Description

We are Aleksandra and Marta, two friends and art students from Łódź, Poland. We are currently taking a break from our academic journey to spend a year looking for inspiration across Europe. We have known each other for almost a decade now, having met during an art class as teenagers. This is our first time workawaying, but not our first time travelling together. We share a common love for the arts, but have very different, though complementary personalities – Aleksandra the extrovert, Marta the introvert, Aleksandra the optimist, Marta the pessimist, Aleksandra the dog person and Marta the cat person... We both quickly adapt to new environments, and are diligent and hard workers.

    More about us:

My name is Aleksandra (although I am more commonly called Ola, a popular Polish nickname), and I am turning 24 in a few days. I have recently graduated with an MA in Photography from The Łódź Film School and am now taking a year off before beginning my postgraduate studies in Germany.

I am the type of person that is constantly on the move, constantly searching for new stimuli, whether those coming from people or places. Last year, I spent a semester in Rome, where I was an exchange student at the Rome University of Fine Arts. Before that I lived for half a year in Berlin, where I worked at an art gallery that specializes in Swedish photography. In the meantime, I created a large photographic documentary project of my own, which took me all the way across Poland, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. Right now, I work (mostly remotely, and part-time) as an artist’s assistant to a Polish-American photographer. The last two years of my life – and in particular the last few months – have been incredibly intense, and I have found myself dreaming of a getaway which would allow me to take a break from being anchored to my desk. I would like to spend some time working with my hands and let my mind wander, allowing new ideas to be born.

As for me-the-person: I am ambitious and highly organized, I love planning trips to even the smallest detail (and of course going on them). I am of an art lover, and in particular a lover of cinema (and of course photography); I am in particular fond of the types of films that make many roll their eyes: slow, full of meditative long takes and mysterious symbolism, such as the work of Tarkovsky or (my all time favorite) Apichatpong Weerasethakul. I am curious and love discovering the cultures of other countries, and cinema is often my way of doing so

My name is Marta and I am 25 years old. I am a fashion design student, currently on a gap year.

I decided to take a gap year before completing my master’s degree to refresh my mind and explore new experiences beyond my academic routine. This break is an opportunity to step away from the computer, immerse myself in different activities, and focus on improving my language skills. I believe this time will help me return to my studies with renewed energy and a broader perspective.

I was an amateur equestrian for over 8 years, and although I quit a few years ago, I am still passionate about animals, and especially horses.

  • More details about your skills

    Aleksandra:

My native language is Polish, I speak fluent English (C2) and Italian (B1/B2), as well as some basic German. As for typical workaway-type skills, I have some renovation experience (wall painting, etc.) and am an excellent cook. I grew up in a house with a large garden so I am used to basic gardening/general maintenance tasks. I love dogs!

As for the more unique skills which I can use: my degree in photography gave me an in-depth knowledge of the field and all sorts of things related to it, such as image and video editing, social media content creation, book design etc. I am a proficient in Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, InDesign and DaVinci Resolve.

    Marta:

I am a diligent and detail-oriented individual with strong manual skills, eager to work on hands-on tasks or DIY projects. I’m looking forward to learning new skills!

I am a native Polish speaker, and have fluent knowledge of English, we well as some basics of Spanish.
Lately, I’ve been fully dedicated to my studies and my passion for fashion design, particularly focusing on knitwear and other art activities such as: drawing, painting, printmaking, crocheting, textile designing.

I am also proficient in programs like Photoshop and Corel. I would love to contribute to projects that combine craftsmanship and creativity.

Thanks to my equestrian hobby, I have previous experience in animal care.
