Hello, I’m Nick. I grew up and studied in Orlando, Florida, and recently I’ve been living in the Florida Keys. While the Keys have given me a deep appreciation for nature and the ocean, I’ve always been drawn to culture, ideas, and creativity as the ways we make sense of the world.
I’m a seeker at heart. I enjoy culture in many forms—films that are made with real artistic vision, music that carries depth and history, literature that lingers in your mind long after reading, and art that speaks beyond words. I find meaning in exploring how people express themselves, and I travel not only to see new places but to experience the ideas, values, and beauty that shape them.
What excites me about Workaway is that it offers something more authentic than tourism. To me, travel is about exchange: offering my time, energy, and openness in return for connection, understanding, and shared experiences. I want to immerse myself in everyday life—whether that’s helping with gardening, assisting with hospitality, learning local crafts, or simply sharing stories over a meal.
During my time in the Keys I worked in hospitality at Bud n’ Mary’s Marina, where I discovered how much I genuinely enjoy meeting new people from all walks of life. I find fulfillment in assisting others, whether it’s making their day easier, answering questions, or just being a welcoming presence. That experience deepened my appreciation for the value of connection and service—skills and attitudes I bring with me wherever I go.
I’m equally comfortable in quiet reflection and in lively conversation. I value independence but also enjoy being part of a community, even temporarily. My background in film production has taught me patience, adaptability, and how to collaborate with people of different perspectives and temperaments. I’m also very technically savvy with modern technology, from media and editing tools to everyday digital problem-solving, which often comes in handy in unexpected ways.
Beyond work, you’ll often find me with a guitar in hand, exploring a museum, reflecting through writing, or just walking with no particular destination. I believe the richest experiences come when curiosity meets openness, and I hope to leave each place I stay not only with new skills and friendships but also with deeper insight into what makes life meaningful in that corner of the world.

Hospitality & Guest Service: I worked at Bud n’ Mary’s Marina in the Florida Keys in our booking office. My main role consisted of booking fishing charters for the general public, both over the phone and in-person, while regularly assisting visitors, answering questions, and making sure their experience was smooth and enjoyable, all while informing them of the tourism the Florida Keys has to offer. I genuinely enjoy meeting new people, conversing with them about where they came from, any questions they may have, and feel fulfilled when I am able to help others.

Technology, Media & Creative Work: I’m very comfortable with modern technology, from everyday troubleshooting to more advanced creative tools. I simultaneously hold a background in film and media production. I have worked on various short films and documentaries, so I have a creative side with experience in video editing, cameras, and digital workflows—but I’m equally happy helping with general tech needs.

Hands-On & Outdoor Work: Having lived in both Orlando and the Keys, I’ve spent plenty of time outdoors—boating, fishing, and doing practical tasks that require patience and adaptability. Our marina was filled with more than 50 boats of all sizes, so the work meant we were surrounded by large vehicles and heavy machinery, something I have learned to work around and with. Being that Bud n’ Mary’s is a charter marina, this meant that teaching others how to fish was a necessity as part of my work. My natural patience with others as well as a desire to teach and inform allowed me to excel in this aspect. I don’t mind physical work, outdoors and indoors, and I learn quickly in new environments. As a small aside, I do have experience in woodworking, specifically luthiery, having worked at Historic Makeovers for some time. Our shop specialized in the restoration and conversion of vintage electric guitars.

Communication & Adaptability: Through my work and travels I’ve developed strong communication skills. I enjoy collaborating with others of all backgrounds, but I’m also comfortable working independently and figuring things out as I go.

Overall, I’d describe myself as adaptable, reliable, and open to learning. I may not have a farming background or specialized trade, but I’m practical, observant, and eager to contribute wherever I can be useful.

I was fortunate to spend just over three weeks with Jean and Philippe from November into December 2025, during what was my first Workaway experience and certainly not my last. While I was embarking on a five-month journey across the world, my time working and living at their beautiful property in Coutances remains one of the top highlights of my… read more trip, even in hindsight. I learned a great deal, not only from the work itself, but from the cultural exchange with Jean, Philippe, and my fellow Workawayers.

The work, at least during the time of year I was there, mainly consisted of helping with the upkeep of their beautiful property through gardening and general maintenance tasks. At that time of year, Normandy is quite wet and dark, with short days, so the gardens and property require regular tending. Taking care of their herd of horses also made up a large part of our work. Jean and Philippe were always careful to make sure we were comfortable and happy with the work we were doing. If any of us felt uncomfortable or inexperienced with a task, there were always alternatives to keep us busy. Conversely, if you wanted to try your hand at something new, they were always open to that as well.

Jean and Philippe were incredibly hospitable and warm. They treated my fellow Workawayers and me as if we were family, and we were very well accommodated. The food was one of the biggest highlights, as both Jean and Philippe are phenomenal cooks and represented their French heritage beautifully through their meals. They even encouraged us to cook something of our own if we wished to share a taste of where we came from. I looked forward to every meal, not just because of the food, but because of the joy of gathering around the table, sharing meals, stories, and culture with people from around the world.

During our time off, Jean and Philippe made sure we had fun and interesting places to visit. They were kind enough to help us plan our days off, and even generous enough to help with transportation by taking us to nearby train stations. I was fortunate to see a number of cities and towns in the Normandy region during my stay, but the absolute must-see is Mont Saint-Michel.

For those considering this Workaway, there are a few things worth mentioning. I would definitely recommend it to people who enjoy being outdoors, working with animals, getting their hands dirty, and perhaps learning a new skill or two. This is also a household that thrives on meaningful interaction and community. If you are looking for a more passive or purely transactional arrangement, this may not be the right fit. But if you are open to being part of the household, sharing meals, exchanging stories, and contributing to the rhythm of daily life, it is a deeply rewarding experience.

The balance between work and free time was more than fair. They follow the standard Workaway arrangement: five hours a day, five days a week, with two days off and three meals provided daily. The accommodations were very comfortable and cozy, and I felt that the living needs of both myself and my fellow Workawayers were very well met.

Regarding language and cultural exchange, this is a perfect experience for anyone looking to practice their French. For non-French speakers or beginners, communication should not be a concern. I came as a non-speaker myself and had no issues. Philippe speaks excellent English, and while Jean speaks less, communicating with him was never a problem. Although I did not come with the specific intention of learning French, I arrived with a general curiosity and open-mindedness toward the language, and I left having learned quite a few words, phrases, and basic introductions. I had always thought French was a beautiful sounding language, but being around it so often, especially at the dinner table, only deepened my view that it truly is one of the most beautiful sounding languages in the world.

To experience a taste of rural French life from the house, to the food, to the sights, and especially the people was beautifully surreal and enlightening. Had it not been for the rest of my travels, I would certainly have stayed longer. I will absolutely be returning in the near future. To Jean, Philippe, and my fellow Workawayers: thank you for an unforgettable experience. À la prochaine!
