Hi everyone,

I'm Mika, 19 years old from Hamburg, in the north of Germany.

After completing my A-Levels last year, I spent 2 months travelling through Europe by train with friends. An instructive, but above all impressive time.

For the past 5 months I worked for a local IT service provider.
But now I'm ready to go out into the world again.

I'm excited to get to know a new culture, reconnect with myself and nature and take care of animals or whatever other help is needed.

As a child, I grew up very close to nature near the big city. I spent a lot of time outdoors, on farms or by the water, especially with my brother and my grandad. That is probably why I still enjoy working in nature, at best with animals.

In the recent past, my interests were strongly focussed on technology. I have been studying business informatics since the 8th year of school and worked part-time. I built solar systems, small cabins in the North Sea, and various other projects such as webcams or network infrastructures for clubs and companies.
I also had the opportunity to be in charge of event technology at school for 6 years. In addition to the technical side of things, I learnt how to manage smaller festivals (up to 3000 people) where there were always spontaneous problems to solve.
During the war against Ukraine, I worked with refugees and helped them to cope with the German "jungle of authorities". A very formative time.

Now, however, I would like to return to my childhood experiences and escape my everyday technical life.

Maybe I should also tell you something about my weaknesses.
Sometimes I think to be a little bit too shy when I'm not in a group, but just give me the time to settle in and I'll be your friend!
This is also a reason why I started to travel.

Mika stayed with us for about three weeks. Our only complaint is a serious one: that was too short! Mika is a very pleasant guy, with great enthusiasm, and great hunger for learning, and eager to finish what he started.

One of the things which stood out to us, even in amongst all the other great sides of him, was the deep love he had for our… read more animals. Most people who come here build up a relationship with at least some of our sheep, the dog, and/or any of the others. But Mika seemed to go step deeper than most. It is hard to describe, but it was magnificent to witness. I'd say that someone who has that in him or herself, must be a pretty good person.

Due to me being away for a weekend just after he arrived, Mika had to take care of the animals for almost two full days just after he arrived, and he did that with confidence.

In part because of this, he learned the ropes with moving the sheep all by himself in our holistically planned grazing setup faster than anyone so far.

He learned a lot of the theory about the grazing method as well, and certainly knows more and is more experienced with the method than I was when i started.

He also played a very active role in the shearing of our 12 mature sheep, as well as in the lambing process. We ended up with one bottle lamb, who had to be given the bottle about ten times a day, including at night, and Mika actively claimed this job, and took care of her with deep love.

We also did some forestry. Mika learned the basics of safely taking down trees with an axe, and then processing them into firewood, fence posts, or, in his case, a farm gate.

The gate we built with roundwood from our own woodland, self harvested, and built using two different kinds of mortice and tennon joints. Although new to him, he learned it quickly. The gate wasn't quite finished yet when the working hours of his last day were officially gone, but he insisted on putting in a few more hours because he just enjoyed the work, and wanted to finish what he started.

Other than work-related stuff, he was a very easy person to spend more time with. For almost all the time he was here, it was just the two of us. The meals we shared were very nice, and we actually went on a kayak trip, and several fishing trips together. It was fun!
