  • Description

Hello, I'm Merlyn! I'm positive, enthusiastic, easy-going and love connecting with other beings. I am passionate about environmental sustainability and community building. I graduated high school hoping, like many, to set off on an adventure, but as the world was in lockdown I instead went to university. I studied environmental management under a Bachelor of Science, which strengthened my determination to do my bit for climate change, and taught me how much I love learning.

I am also curious about spirituality and religion, with an open mind about the many different ways people live and look at the world. I was raised in an intentional community of eight households, where many people around me had spiritual beliefs. Through this I was exposed to numerous different perspectives. I am always exploring my own beliefs and ways of understanding life.

After studying, I house sat in rural Australia, living wonderfully simply in a house where we cooked on the fire, and the day rotated around looking after the animals. I solo backpacked up to far north Queensland and then spent some time in Vancouver, caring for my elderly grandmother, and appreciating the little things, like watching the seasons change and a smile shared with a stranger.

Now I have my sights set on Europe! I have learned a small amount of Spanish which I would love to practice and improve, so Spain and Portugal are first on the cards, and the UK and Ireland.

I have a wide range of new and long term interests; Intentional communities and co-housing, gardening (I love putting my hands in soil!!) and permaculture, being active in nature, hiking and camping, any creative project - photography, knitting, felting etc, music.

Other volunteer experience includes - weekly at a rest home serving tea and chatting to residents, weekly at a food rescue kitchen washing dishes, in conservation roles educating visitors about wildlife and checking traps, planting native trees, and others.

Thanks for reading my profile, and I look forward to meeting you!
    Merlyn

  • More details about your skills

Community building, leadership, organizational and people skills - I have conceptualized, organized, and ran a few creative events for the public, focused on enabling people to form new connections. I also established a 12 person flat and facilitated meetings and events for that.

I also have experience (to varying degrees) in gardening, animals, children and elderly, am a native english speaker.

Creative skills - I can take a good photo and have edited a few videos before.
My entire education was at a Waldolf school, which priorities creativity, so while not highly skilled at any of the following I can do to at least a basic level - felting (I ran a felting workshop for high school students), painting and drawing, clay modelling, jewelry making, knitting, play guitar, ukulele/other instruments (have written a few songs and gotten groups of people singing!)

Conservation skills - I volunteered for three weeks in a conservation park which involved researching and educating visitors on local wildlife, monitoring wildlife and checking animal traps.

I am enthusiastic and a keen learner, will give most things a try, and would love to expand my skill set.
