  • Description

We are two university students from Estonia that are looking for new experiences, new faces, new stories! We feel like we have stayed in our safe and familiar surroundings for a bit too long – while the whole world is out there waiting for us. Loona is a medicine student, Saara studies linguistics and literature, and we’re both passionate about our (and each other’s!) subjects. What is a human, actually? What are different people like? How do they communicate with each other, how do different languages affect how we see the world? That’s why we’re both drawn to enriching community projects that bring together people from different backgrounds.

Despite our theoretical interests, we’re not afraid of physical work either! We’re open to new challenges and we learn quickly, so you can give us anything. We’d be happy to help!

We’re coming to Southern France for two weeks in August to practice speaking French and get a taste of the local life. This is the first time we’re trying out Workaway, but we’ve both done volunteer work before in our home country, mostly at different cultural events. We are very sociable and excited to learn something new about the world :-)

Saara has studied culture theory, mathematics, and is now studying in linguistics master’s. She works as an editor in a literature magazine and is occasionally publishing some articles in cultural newspapers. She has also taught some mathematics courses in university, worked as an English-Estonian translator and as a salesman in a local store. She speaks fluent Estonian and English, intermediate French (that she’d love to practice!) and some beginner level Russian and Swedish. What else? Saara has done some construction work at home, renovating an old cottage, including the complete restoration of old wooden windows. She has also participated in restoring ceiling paintings in an old village church. It’s no problem for her to help out her parents with anything needed in her countryside home, including gardening and general maintenance.

Loona has been studying medicine for the past 5 years, so she knows how to give first aid and suture a wound (at the very least!) and gets on well with people of all ages. She has worked in a small art-house cinema for many years and her favourite filmmaker is Agnès Varda. Loona speaks Estonian, English, French, Russian and Finnish. She loves to make things with her own hands, from knitting and sewing to painting and renovating (the latter probably needing some guidance). She has even taken part in an archeological excavation once.

Both of us are good at cooking and baking (so we can introduce you to the famous Estonian cuisine;)). We’ve also done some gardening with our parents and grandparents and love looking after pets (Saara has a dog and a cat, Loona dreams of having one). We both have driver’s licences.
