Hey! I am Lilly, 23 years old :) I will be solo traveling in Sri Lanka for 2 months and am looking for nice people to travel with! My plan is to travel the north and east in October and the south in November. I love to be active during my travels and do all kinds of activities like hiking, climbing, yoga, surfing... I am really looking forward to get to know the culture of the people in Sri Lanka as well as spending lots of time outside in nature. In between my travels, I'd love to try out workaway!

I will never forget my first workaway experience! I spent two weeks in the basecamp in Sri Lanka with the project leader Jay and his team. Jay was the best host you can imagine. Such a sweet person! He wasn’t all the time there in the house with us but still he always made sure we were fine, always helping wherever he could.
You will be living,… read more eating, sleeping and working together with a couple of really really lovely locals and other volunteers. These people welcomed me with warm smiles and kind hearts and they felt like family to me so fast. In the first days I was a bit overwhelmed by living with so many people in one house, so many noises and not having any privacy (I am a little introverted sometimes). But I got used to it really fast and then I loved the closeness to everyone! And in the end it was so hard leaving everybody because they have become so important to me. Thanks to my workaway I met wonderful people. I am so grateful for this! We always had so much fun together, so much love and caring for each other!! We learned so much from each other, talking about cultural differences, doing yoga together, dancing salsa, headstands, learning singhalese… My favourite memory was dancing in the jungle altogether during heavy rain. I will forever remember this :)

The place is amazing. You really feel like part of nature there in the jungle. It was so interesting to experience living in the middle of the jungle with all the nature sounds and animals like monkeys around you. Also the surrounding area is really beautiful. Lots of rivers, waterfalls, small mountains… it's not touristic at all what I personally loved. The Udawalawe National Park is close by, too.

The tasks were really simple. Sometimes we cleaned bamboo to prepare it for building a bamboo house, sometimes we digged for plants and soil and put them in little bags… my highlight was when it finally had been raining a lot and we could plant little baby trees. Jay taught me so much about nature protection and the rainforest ecosystem. He is such an interesting person with so much knowledge and wisdom.

We had to work 4-5 days per week and usually the weekend was off-days but Jay is really flexible about it. During our off-days I went on trips with the other volunteers. One day Jay even took us on a safari and we finally saw some wild elephants. We also did trips to a lake and river for swimming which was soo cool! Thank you for everything, Jay!

Side note: In this project you only get free accommodation, the food you have to pay yourself. A woman from the village prepared three meals for the volunteers for just 1500 rupees per day. The food was extremely delicious and this woman is just wonderful!

When you seek friendship and want to contribute to the protection of mother nature and dive deeply in the jungle life and Sri Lankan culture, I highly recommend you to do your workaway there. I miss everyone so much. I hope I will be able to come back one day!
