Hey there! My name is Larry, I am a 26 year old from the United States. I have a friendly and respectful approach to both work and travel. I have extensive experience in hospitality and take pride in being clean, organized, and easy to work with. I also hold a bachelor’s degree in computer science and mathematics, which has strengthened my problem-solving skills and attention to detail. I recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin in mathematics and computer science, so I have some expertise working with computers. I have some experience doing projects around the house, mostly with small repairs but occasionally with some smaller building. Gardening is another field in which I have a little experience, my mother and grandmother both had amazing gardens that I loved to help maintain.

I had such a great time during my two weeks in Bad Langensalza! Being my first workaway, I had no idea what to expect at first, but Michael and the whole team made it especially easy for me to feel at home right away. Everyone in and around the house was incredibly nice and fun to be around. People are happy to help you find whatever you need or… read more just nice to talk to in general. The living accommodations themselves are also more than satisfactory. I slept my first few nights in one of the museum galleries on the second floor, and even that provided me with comfortable sleep and a beautiful view of the thousand-year-old church across the street to wake up to. I will warn though that the first two floors of the house are very old and have fairly low ceilings which did result in hitting my head a few times.
Most of the work I did during my time in Langensalza consisted of setting up/renovating the house that Michael and the team recently purchased for refugees of the crisis in Ukraine. The house was not in great condition when purchased and was empty, so a lot of my work was just cleaning the house and putting together furniture that was ordered for the house as well. Many of the towns people were also a huge part in helping out with this project, volunteering tons of their own time and donating a crazy amount of items for the house as well. Getting to meet and spend time with all the lovely people of Langensalza was one of my favorite parts of this experience. Another big part of my work was participating in and even leading the "Global Salon", an English conversation group for local Germans looking to improve on their English. This was yet another great way to meet more locals and realize that their English is far better than my German.
Michael and Jörg themselves were also wonderful hosts. While Michael was quite busy during most of my stay, he still made time to make sure that me and the other workawayer were making the most of our time in Langensalza. He set up plenty of fun things for us to do around the area, including a hike through the the Hainich forest, a walking tour of the old town, a tour of the local wildcat park, and an evening at the thermal pool. Jörg would cook a delicious meal for us most often which was always a nice treat after a long day. On other occasions, Michael and Jörg would take us out for dinner in town, which was much appreciated.
Overall, a very positive experience for me in Bad Langensalza. I would definitely recommend helping out here with these wonderful people.
