  • Description

Hello, my name is Jess and I am a 21 year old student from the UK. I am currently coming to the end of my 2nd year of university studying anthropology at Durham. I have been looking for an opportunity to explore Europe this summer, and I came across Work-away which seems like a wonderful way to experience a new country, meet and connect with new people, and immerse oneself into an alternate lifestyle.

The thing that brings me most happiness is being able to connect with the natural world and have meaningful interactions with others, both things that have become increasingly challenging in the technologically oriented 21st century. I love to practice yoga and art.

I am very passionate about sustainability, and the importance of respecting and living in harmony with the natural world, particularly given the critical stage we have reached in climate change, deforestation and species extinction. I would love the opportunity to experience a simpler, more fulfilling lifestyle, and learn as much as I can from likeminded individuals.

  • More details about your skills

Im young, fit, healthy and love to spend time outdoors. I grew up in the countryside, so I am very used to nature and am not afraid of getting my hands dirty !

I am happy to try anything, and will put my all into any work I am given. I particularly love to cook, and I have completed 3 weeks of training as a Chalet Chef, achieving my Level 2 Hygiene standard award, so would be more than happy to help out cooking dinner for everyone during my stay.

Any sort of arty or practical activity also always appeals to me.

I have a varied experience of volunteering; from assisting at a local girls club (known as 'brownies'), to helping local children to learn to read, and spending time in Costa Rica on my gap year working at turtle hatcheries and participating in plastic beach clean ups.

I spent my last summer at a 10-week activity camp in Upstate New York as a camp councillor and sail instructor, so I am very well versed in living in close quarters with others !

I also have experience as an high-end event waitress, and as a server at a local pizza restaurant, so I am very used to both working in a team and independently.

  • What else ...

I love to spend time in nature and explore new places with new people. I have been fortunate enough to travel to many different beautiful countries with my family, and I have also have spent 14 weeks solo back-packing in Costa Rica and Greece on my Gap year. These experiences have made me increasingly keen to spend time visiting new places and immersing myself into different cultures and ways of living.

As a student of Anthropology, much of my studies consist of the examination of life, culture, and society. As I have progressed further into my degree I have become increasingly disillusioned by the thought of becoming a part of the shallow and detached corporate race which has resulted in the loss of true core values of family, friendship and mother nature. This is what drew me to work-away - the opportunity to meet those people who have rejected modern norms, and experience life done differently.
