New Zealand - from Jan 2025 until Mar 2025 View allDescription
Hi everyone! My name is Jemma and I come from Seattle, Washington. I joined Workaway two years ago while on a gap year, because I wanted to travel and immerse myself in different countries and cultures. Fast forward to now, and that one gap year has turned into three! During these gap years I have split my time between traveling as a workawayer and working in my hometown. I love exploring new places, especially when there are opportunities for outdoor activities. My curiosity about the world and what lies beyond my hometown has motivated me to travel. I enjoy helping people and learning new skills. The small things in life are what bring me happiness. I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, baking, playing sports, hiking, running, swimming, skiing, biking, camping, walking my dog, playing piano, and traveling.

More details about your skills
I am a native English speaker with a high school diploma and a two-year general university degree (called an Associate of Arts degree). When I'm not traveling I work in my hometown. Most recently, from September to December of 2024, I worked as a paraeducator in an elementary school. My role was to provide one-on-one support to students with autism. Back in 2023, I volunteered as an assistant to an English teacher. The classes I helped teach were for refugees and immigrants. In both of these teaching roles I loved getting to know the students, learning about their lives, and helping them succeed in school! I am very keen to learn new languages and help teach others English if they are interested in learning. I know a tiny bit of American Sign Language too.
In 2023 I also spent six months working at a child care center. I cared for children between the ages of one and five. I greatly enjoyed working with kids and watching them grow! I also have experience with customer service and food handling from working at a pizza restaurant for two years. At the restaurant I had a variety of responsibilities including cooking, working the cash register, and helping keep the dining room and kitchen clean. I also have lots of animal care experience (both pets and farm animals), some house-sitting experience, some gardening experience, and a little bit of construction experience. I have been a workawayer around the world on farms, in schools, and in people's private homes. I enjoy learning new things and would like to expand my skill set to become a more self-reliant person.Age
