Description
Jake and I are two high school buddies setting off after graduating college!
CLARE:
Hi, I'm Clare and I just graduated university with a degree in Computer Systems Engineering. I spend a lot of my time bouncing between different interests: reading, drawing, and playing music. I am new to workaway, but I have done WWOOF before in Colorado after high school. This experience helped me to understand the benefit of getting to know people and places outside of popular tourist areas as a fulfilling way to travel. I am interested in seeing the history and cultural differences of other places. I hope to be able to see the rural life of other countries as well as the city life. As someone from a rural area, it will be nice to have a break from huge bustling cities.
Most of my outdoor work experience comes from working on my dad's grassfed beef farm. There I cleaned barns, set up electric fence, and helped to take care of cows and sheep. I also have experience raising and milking dairy goats.
I currently work in landscaping: weeding, planting, pruning trees, and mulching. I've learned a lot about gardening here, mostly decorative plants like rose bushes. Before I mostly worked in restaurants: a pizza parlor and higher end local restaurant. I've made dough, used a stone pizza oven, fryers, and worked the line on saute.
I also have experience with using various tools, for school projects and my own. I have worked mostly with drills (both using drill bits and hole saws), hand saws, 3D printing, and soldering irons. I have built a simple bookshelf and a NFT hydroponic contraption for my final school project. It had some automation, but I mostly worked on the actual NFT system. I also often do little electronics projects, mostly building audio circuits like guitar pedals.
JAKE:
Hi, my name is Jake and I'm a new addition to the workaway community. I recently graduated from university studying biology and I'm just starting my world travels beginning with Europe. I'm very interested in world history, and I'm taking this chance to experience other countries and cultures before career obligations. Clare and I wanted to help local hosts with their interesting projects along our route and see life away from the hectic downtown whenever possible.
As for my skills, I've worked on my parents' rental houses and have some experience with carpentry installing panels on cabinets, trim around windows and doors, as well as shelves in kitchens and sheds. I've laid a kitchen brick floor and mixed the mortar & grout. I've helped install doors however I'm not very confident doing so alone. I've also installed lighting fixtures and outlet covers and I'm decent at painting walls. I'm comfortable using power tools such as chainsaws, table saws, chop saws, angle grinders and ocillating tools.
I work for my dad's forestry business in southern Indiana. We sustainably harvest hardwood trees and also restore native forests by killing invasive plants and trees across thousands of acres yearly. I have experience identifying trees and assessing their health as well as removing harmful influences from forests.
I'm very interested in the natural world and I keep several honeybee colonies and build hive parts for them to live inside. I also grow exotic cacti in a greenhouse I built for that purpose. I enjoy using electronics projects to solve problems, such as a DIY vaporizer to treat honeybee parasites and my greenhouse's temperature control system.
