Description
Hey! We're Laura and Jack from Scotland, currently in our last few months studying at the University of St Andrews. Together we have a diverse range of knowledge, with Laura studying Sustainable Development and Jack studying Computer Science (we know its so different!).
After we finish our final exams for university in early May, having poured all our energy into studying, we're hoping to get away and spend time doing something completely different! We want to contribute to somewhere meaningful, whether that's applying ourselves to gardening, animal care, sustainability projects, DIY, or really anything in-between. We head off to Sri Lanka on the 6th June, so it would only be a short period of time that we could volunteer, but we know we can make the most of it :)
As competitive Scottish weightlifters on the side, we're very familiar with physical hard work and the importance of dedicating yourself to a task. We're determined, self-motivated, and always help out whenever we can.
Jack grew up in Sri Lanka for 13 years and has fond memories of his time spent on the beach with his family, being part of a village community, and looking after his cats over the years! He moved to the UK as a teenager and adapted quickly to the new culture, now approaching the end of his university in Scotland. He loves playing guitar, has worked on several fascinating coding projects, and enjoys slowing down in the outdoors.
Laura grew up in the Cotswolds, similarly surrounded by countryside, and has always stuck her hands into any DIY project that comes her way. She is always doing some sort of handicraft, from crochet, sewing, or baking, and is particularly keen in making high-protein veggie meals! She spent lots of her teenage years looking after her uncle's precious golden retriever, Lucie, who she sees as a sister to her.
Together, we love to read, go on walks or runs, listen to music, and explore new places. AND of course, we love good food and good coffee!
We would love to hear about volunteering opportunities in Greece, Portugal, or Italy - places we've visited before but would love to go back and experience more of the culture and catch some sun!

More details about your skills
Outdoors and physical work
- We're competitive weightlifters, so we're strong and are built to do hard physical tasks! We also run and can put our all into getting tasks done quickly and effectively.
- We are super comfortable living and being outdoors, having both grown up in incredible landscapes on our doorsteps.
DIY and Practical Skills
- Laura has taken on all sorts of DIY projects from a young age as her dad works in decorating. She looks at all the small details, is super hands-on, and resourceful, having built her own business in lockdown selling handmade beaded jewellery which generated over 1500 orders.
- Jack's coding background brings logical problem-solving to tasks, he's practical, methodical, and is skilled with electronics. He's also got Scottish Weightlifting Records, so can apply his strength to all tasks.
Community Work
- We both volunteer as Weightlifting Coaches, teaching beginners on a weekly basis, and are always warm, sociable, and easy to build a connection with.
- Jack previously coached Cricket for three years, and Laura coached Ballet and Tap for three years, so together have a lot of experience working in the community for a greater good!
