  • Description

Hi! My name is Gwen and I am 25 years old. I am from British Columbia in Canada and I am a big lover of the outdoors. I live near the mountains, and love to spend time outside, either hiking, camping, canoeing, rock climbing or skiing! I come from a family of three kids and have grown up with two very loving parents. I like to consider myself as a very happy and enthusiastic person, and someone who wakes up with a smile on my face! Although I also like to believe that I am curious and reflective (the scientist in me), and an admirer of the small things in life.

I am coming to Australia to visit a good friend who I grew with and who is doing some of her PhD work here. We, along with one other friend, are going to travel around together for a month up and down the East coast. I am really excited to see this beautiful country, spending time in the mountains and on the beaches, and learning from the people here. I would love to extend my trip in Australia beyond this month and spend some time as a workaway, with local people and immersed in the culture!

I have just finished my Master of Science degree studying microbiology from a university in Ontario, Canada and am really excited to spend some time travelling and exploring the world before starting my career. I love all things science and nature, and tasks that involve using my hands. I am always eager to learn new things too!

I am new to Workaway but I love to travel and love the motto behind this platform and what it stands for. I had done a study abroad semester in Italy while I was in my undergraduate degree and had my first taste of the traveling there. Since, I have spent many summers working aboard a 200 passenger vessel that travels around the coasts of Europe, Canada, and into the Canadian Arctic, with a focus on engaging with the local and Indigenous populations here. As for my previous experiences volunteering, I have just spent a year volunteering at a local hospital while I was in graduate school in a role that focussed on chatting with elderly patients to bring some light into their days and to avoid the onset of delirium. I have also volunteered in various tutoring, mentoring, and soccer coaching positions while I was at university, all of which I adored.

I love to help and learn from others, and am really excited about the prospect of lending a helping hand wherever is needed! I am thrilled at the opportunity to meet new people and learn more about beautiful Australia, while being as much help as possible to you!

I like to think that many of my skills are routed in my love and curiosity for science and the outdoors! I really enjoy cooking, gardening and pursuing other DIY projects. I have always loved to cook (I know lots of fun vegetarian recipes), bake, and try new recipes. I also grew up helping my family in the garden (planting and weeding) and cutting the lawn, and love to get outside with these kind of tasks.

My family owns a cabin on a small lake in remote BC. Here, my dad has built over 10 wooden cabins/structures and I have helped him work on some of these endeavours, with things that require a variety of hand and power tools, and with things like painting and sanding wood. I also worked as a research assistant for two summers in an ecology lab, where we made various large rain structures and where I worked with power and hand tools. I have driven a wide variety of vehicles (large pickup trucks, quads, and boats) and have both my full driver's and boating license.

I also enjoy other household chores like cleaning (both interior and exterior) and have spent time babysitting growing up (mostly ages 9-13) and love kids! I attended French immersion school from kindergarten until the end of high school, and am more than happy to help with English or French languages. I love to tutor and teach kids and have spent over 5 years tutoring in subjects of science, math and English.
