  • Description

I am a young and very employable professional engineer who is reclaiming their cultural experience to live in a non-English speaking country with a different lifestyle. I travelled to many places and found the people of Finland to make me feel the most at home. So this is where I took my only opportunity to apply for a working holiday visa (a unique visa only for Australian and New Zealand residents with some weird constraints such as only working for a single paid employer for three months maximum).

Before I became an engineer, I had part time work at a cinema, as well as a swimming pool where I taught swimming lessons, supervised the pool area and school holiday programs, so I know how to work with children.

This summer I volunteered at many music festivals. My tasks included
    - driving band members
    - cleaning backstage
    - moving equipment backstage
    - bar assistant (restocking drinks and ingredients, making cocktails to assist the bar tender)

In autumn I taught computer programming to Ukrainian teenagers and young adults.

I have lived in share houses most of my life outside living at home, so I am very good at cooperating when it comes to cleaning and living with different people.

In Finland, I have also worked at Posti in their warehouse and I have been a waiter at a restaurant (both paid roles), so I have a lot of different skills to my engineering work.

I was drawn to Finland because my main passions are technology, heavy metal and nature. I don't think I have to explain that much more, I think the fact that Finland exists tells the story for me.

I am hoping to have a true Nordic experience for the cold dark winter. I need to distract myself with dog sledding, reindeers, ice swimming, cross country skiing, snow hiking and all of the above really. I am also hoping to learn a lot about the Sámi culture and how it is similar and different to the culture of the indigenous Australians. I hope I can find amazing hosts to help me experience this. In return I will be a quick learner to help you with what you need from a Workawayer. I am also hoping that friends from Finland, wider Europe and maybe even Australia will visit me so if you provide accomodation for your business (e.g. hotel, log cabin) that would be even better.

More details about my language interests
I am actively learning Finnish and I can notice my improvements over short period of times. My Finnish friends have been impressed by my general knowledge, pronunciation and dedication. I want to continue learning throughout my one year stay here and beyond.I am able to provide advanced help in English. For example I sometimes help my friends with some English tips for their academic papers and essays.

  • More details about your skills

I just like to think I am an adaptable person who can learn quick and become independent with time. I do all my cooking and cleaning at home so I am quite okay with this. I would not say I am an animal person like everyone who posts pictures of their dog and cat on instagram, but I think the animals will like me and I will be more motivated to spend time with them when this is what I dedicate my time to. I did a barista course in Australia for fun as I owned an espresso machine in my old house so I can make good coffee. I have previously worked as a swim teacher, school holiday program assistant and pool party host so I have experience with children. I might not have the best eye for detail with gardening or construction but I can do the more basic tasks like chopping wood, clearing waste etc.

I find it easier to describe my skillset when applying for a technical job but if you tell me what needs to be done I can tell you how I will solve that problem and let's see if I am a good fit.

  • What else ...

I might come back to this later, it feels like I have described a lot. If you think I am a strange person for choosing Finland I can tell you my story and you will completely understand my mindset after that.
