  • Description

Hello! My name is Grace, people know me as Gray! I spent this past summer working as a sailing instructor with Outward Bound on the midcoast of Maine, and I love being outside everyday! In last few years, I've been working and living seasonally, which has been such a blast, and I've learned so many new skills. I lived out of my vehicle, did workaway in San Diego replacing a traditional grass lawn with a drought tolerant succulent, and learned to surf. I also love filmmaking and photography, for it's ability to show someone's perspective in its entirety, and allow us to connect with people around the globe. This is what fuels my love for travel as well - getting to meet and work with new people, and hear their stories is incredible. I am always looking for new and exciting adventures, as theres no better time than the present!

  • More details about your skills

I have a wide range of skills that could be of use to you and your home environment! I am also an extremely quick learner, especially in hands on environments, and I am always down for a challenge.

    I have experience in:
    - Photo + Video: I have a degree in Cinema Production and Photography, and cater to all needs in that category - a special event you'd like publicity done for? Trying to get an Airbnb up and running? Looking to document your new projects, or update your workaway profile with better photos? I am your girl! I love capturing beautiful moments for people, and come with my own equipment! I also have my own website, and have designed a website for someone else (using website design platforms... I have not learned to code yet), so if you're looking to have work done for your business, I can also help with this. (I currently have just my GoPro, and a 35mm film camera with me, but I can always make good work).

    - Sailing: I work as a sailing instructor at Hurricane Island Outward Bound School, up in the United States. I spend my summers taking students out on multi-week expeditions around the coast of Maine, and teach them how to handle sails, coastal pilot, anchor, and work hard. It is also a school that focuses on teaching leadership, perseverance, teamwork, and the value of being outside. I love my job immensely, and am looking to gain more sea time to get my captain's license.

    - Gardening/Farm work: My first two workaway experiences were focused majority in this category. I spent 4 months replacing a traditional grass lawn with a drought-tolerant succulent alternative. It was a long process that I had no prior experience with, but did lots of research, and it turned out fantastic! Easily one of my most proud projects (ask me for photos if you're interested!). My second workaway was at a farm north of São Paulo, and was filled with fruit trees that we cared for each day, as well as a large veggie garden. We planted the garden and took care of the sprouts, as well as picked and processed all of the fruit from the trees (mangoes, lychee, cherries, primarosa, bananas, etc).

    - Building: I did van life out of my SUV, and built out the back of the vehicle to live in, simply through trial and error. I can help design projects and get into it with power tools! I had really no knowledge of building practices before this, but decided I was going to make it happen, so I did. I have never been one to shy away from a challenge.

    - Animal care: from puppies to full grown dogs, I can help care and train (if needed) any of your fluffy friends - I adopted and trained an Aussie Shepard pup over quarantine and learned a LOT about the needs of an intelligent puppy. I also have extensive practice with cats - I rescued a feral kitten and nursed it back to health last summer, and then fostered two feral cats through the fall. From complicated medication and food needs - I would love to help!

    - Cooking! I grew up in a big Italian family, and spent many Sundays cooking with my Dad and Nonna. Sharing a meal was a major part of what it meant to share love in my family, and while I am no chef, I have a few wonderful recipes I'd love to make for your family. I also am a great su chef, so any help you need in the kitchen I am ready for!

    - Cleaning: I have always been an extremely clean person - I feel my best when my space is at its best. I know how difficult upkeep of a house, a property, or a boat can be with how busy life gets, so anything you'd want me to clean, I can handle it. From bathrooms, to garages, or deep cleaning the basement, no mess is too messy. I additionally am a master organizer, so if you have a filing cabinet you've been putting off organizing for 10 years, then I'm your girl!

  • What else ...

I am hoping to spend the next few years of my life living these kinds of experiences. When I was 17, I experienced a life threatening medical emergency (thankfully was completely resolved), that altered my perspective on life. I realized that I kept living in the notion that I had endless time to experience all that life has to offer - I was a perfectly healthy kid and nearly lost my life out of the blue. In that moment, I realized that there isn't necessarily a 'next year' or even a 'tomorrow', and since then, I have strived to make each day feel full. Traveling, meeting new people, and gaining experience in hands on areas is what excites me the most, and workaway aligns all three of those things. I would love to continue my second chance at life in a new place with new opportunities!
