I grew up in a very conservative environment that valued religious conformity over human beings and their needs. Living in the damage that viewpoint often creates taught me the importance of giving people space to be themselves and find their own version of happiness. Having eighteen years of experience in a world that discouraged individuality and self-expression, that sought to limit the imagination and capabilities of those within that community, I know the dissatisfaction that comes with denying who you are and what you can be. This is what motivates me to uplift the global community. Now that I have separated myself from that negative environment, I have slowly been able to discover my identity and the joy that comes with it. I believe every person on this planet deserves that joy and a space for self-expression. I have found meaning in life through trying to show up for other people and create community wherever I am, in any way that I can. While we may not be able to definitively know how or why humanity exists, I believe our purpose on Earth is grounded in our connection to other people, the love we can radiate, and exploring everything this world has to offer as a collective. Using these ideals to imagine a better, more inclusive world is what creates my desire to effect change where it is needed. There are so many people suffering from the society we have established. So many people are stuck in modern society and the role it dolls out to them, they fall victim to the idea that the rules of our world are invariable. I believe we, as a collective (and especially those blessed with privilege and power), are responsible for the world that we create and are completely capable of challenging and changing the rules set in place. There is no better way I could spend my life than to help build a community in which everyone has the opportunity to pursue self- expression and love. Seeing others attain this, and recognizing it in myself, is what brings me the most happiness.
The skills I choose to utilize throughout the different aspects of my life primarily fall into the communications category. I like to think of myself as a story teller and one of the things I love most in life is getting to know people through the stories they tell and sharing my own. This led me to the field of journalism with a specific passion in documentary work, and also translates to strong written skills in creative, academic, and marketing/networking fields.
Another skill I have always been grateful for is my ability to learn new things quickly. Paired with a natural desire to learn about the world, everything it has to offer, and what it could look like in the future, this has helped me explore and take interest in many different opportunities and gain experience in many different fields.
Music and creative writing have always been my biggest hobbies. I play the bass and have formed a few bands throughout the past couple of years. I also just bought a pink synthesizer I'm currently teaching myself to play. My taste in music is always evolving and I love when people share music with me that I feel I haven't heard before and is unique.
Creative writing has been a hobby and outlet for me since middle school and something I'm hoping to pursue with more intention this upcoming year.
