Description
Hi! My name is Emma and I'm 18 years old. I'm from the Netherlands (no, not Amsterdam :)). I'm taking a gap year in which I'm traveling and working abroad, which I'm very excited about! I'm looking forward to exploring new countries.

A few things I love are reading and writing, animals, singing and being in nature. I walk a lot in the forest. With my brothers I jam and make music, as I love singing :) Creativity is also something I practice in writing and painting. Since a while I've been meditating, which I'd love to practice more. I'm a beginner in videography and I enjoy photography.

I'm a bit of a beginner on Workaway but I'm very open to learn and improve my skills (which you can read more about below :D). I've done one Workaway in a French-German community. I have a lot of experience travelling. Every year I go camping with my family and we've travelled around different countries. We've even done wildcamping in Norway, which I loved! I also have some experience with backpacking by train, which I started doing this summer after finishing my exams and it's been an eye-opening experience.

I can cook and I have also catered for bigger groups, one time I was joined by a professional cook for a week. I can also bake and I know how to do several householding chores such as cleaning.

Besides that I am experienced with animals. Since I was a young girl I've been fascinated by them. Sadly my parents were not, which is why took the initiative and went around the neighbourhood to walk people's dogs. I also practiced horse riding from 12 to 17 years old, taking riding lessons and long rides through the forest and on the beach. I've had some pets myself and I treat animals with respect and love.

I'm open to learn anything and I'm not afraid of working hard. I love thinking of new ideas on how to improve a place or add onto it. I am quite a creative person and I also have an eye for design. I've done a little construction work, such as painting and isolating a little dome house.

I had such a wonderful time here and met a lot of amazing people! I stayed here for 2,5 months and so it became like home. In the first two weeks of my stay there was also another workawayer that I got along with very well, which was great! This was my first Workaway experience and I couldn't be more grateful. The location is kind of in the middle… read more of nowhere, close to the city Bussang. If you don't have a driver's license you can cycle there (but beware cause going up the mountain again will knock you out haha, speaking from experience :D). It's a beautiful area to take hikes and go up the Drumont and other peaks. I even experienced snow in the last days I was there, which was breathtaking!

I met a lot of people while being here, as there are visitors (in the guest house and AirBnb huts) that come and go. People who used to live in the community often visited too. Almost everything speaks English, some better than others. The most spoken language was German (not French as you'd maybe expect) and around 2/3 people speak some French :) If you don't speak German you can feel a little excluded at times, but after a while you get used to it. I think the family bond transcends the language barrier. And if you need a hug, the cat Rufus is always around :) The kids were definitely a little wild sometimes, it takes some time to get to know them. They can also be very sweet and fun.

Most of the chores I did were cooking for the community and the guests, and cleaning the house and huts. I also helped with a little renovation in the seminar house (painting etc.) and building the small domes a few times. The work was quite easy and you can always ask for a break or a day off if you want. Besides the work, we also had some fun trips up the mountain to see the sunset or have a picknick. With one of the seminar groups, we went to view the sunrise. If you have a car, you can make trips to Freiburg or other cities on your free days.

On sundays there's always a little get-together to sing and make music, but also reflect on the previous week and share your plans for the coming week. Besides that we ate together at lunch. For the rest you're expected to entertain yourself, as everyone does their own thing. As a bit of an introvert, I enjoyed this. There's enough to explore, do and make. There's no shared meditation or yoga at the moment, contrary to what the description says. The community is still being build and is in a bit of a transitional time, which was sometimes confusing but also fun to be a part of and create new things and habits.

I'm very thankful for my time here and I'm definitely visiting again <3
