Description
Before starting university, I promised myself that I wouldn't waste my last few summer breaks before "growing up" on useful jobs. Instead, I would travel, seek adventure, and grow in ways that don't quite fit on a resume. Two summers ago, I started off strong with a job in Yosemite National Park, then flew off to Valencia, Spain to study and immerse myself for a year, and it was more fulfilling than I could've ever imagined. Then last summer, as long as I was in Europe, I backpacked around for half the summer and did my first workaway for 5 weeks in Hawaii. It was nuts!

Now I'm approaching my last summer break before graduating and I've got a hiiigh bar to beat. My sights are set on Latin America, hoping to find natrual wonders, cultural experiences, and finally perfect the Spanish language.

I'm a very hard worker with a contagious positivity. I have great experience in customer service and maual labor through restaurant work and running my own lawn care business. I work great in a team, but can still be trusted with independent tasks. Through earning Eagle Scout rank and the years of practical experience that followed, I am a confident, respectful leader as well. I will happily work hard on whatever you throw at me.

I also cook realllly good burritos.

John and his family are a band of angels. They create such a special community on that farm, I felt welcome the moment I arrived and torn to pieces leaving 5 weeks later. This was my first workaway, and defintely not my last.

If he puts you on the land, your work will be a healthy mix of battling 6-foot grass with a weed whacker and shovel, and… read more simply watering plants. So, it's not always an easy job, but the progress is really satisfying to see, and you have a totally flexible schedule. The grass doesn't care when you return to battle. I highly recomend starting at 8 to dodge some of the heat and enjoy freedom after 1pm. The roosters will wake you up early anyway. haha enjoy. On the farm stand, your job is much easier, but you'll still be busy. It definitely takes a strong social battery (or a really good fake one) to stay smiley and cheerful towards the customers, but it's genuinely fun. You get to chat with a very diverse crowd. There is always enough food in the kitchen and it's a basic setup, but I could always cook what I wanted. You won't ever be hungry, and John takes grocery suggestions. The sleeping situation is also really bare bones, but we all slept fine and there's plenty of privacy. John's family is so sweet! The kids always brightened my day and John hosted many family dinners and game nights during my stay. Be prepared for karaoke! He's really intentional about making sure everyone is comforable and happy. He offers really clear communication and expects the same in return.

In my downtime, I frequently snorkeled in the bay, skimboarded at slaughterhouse beach, and walked along the coastline to the north of the bay, dipping into some gorgeous tidal pools. You will quickly stop counting the turtles you see. Every single time I snorkeled, I saw something new. There's also a lot of cliff jumping spots! On my off-days, I got around pretty well by just walking, hitchiking, accepting john's ride offers, and taking the bus from the Ritz. However, it reallllly really helped our group get around that one of us had a car. Still, it's super cheap to split an uber. Also, tips should be plenty to break even each week.

You will absolutely love this family and the farm. The small inconvenicnes of the kitchen and tents are honestly more funny than bothersome. If you're considering it, just go for it. I promise your only regret will be not staying longer. Feel free to ask me questions!
