Description
Hi! My name is Carla — I am 27 years old, born in Malta and raised in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

I am a musician and have worked in the Aotearoa music industry for about a decade. I love what I do, but I have decided to take a little break from busy living and computer screens to focus on travelling, meeting new people, and learning new skills, particularly in the world of organic argriculture. I am currently residing with some family in the countryside of Puglia, Italy, where I am helping out with projects around their small farm. I am passionate about travelling through mindful exploration and slow living, and my belief is that participating in work aways or house sitting experiences allows for more meaningful connections to each country, its people and the land.

I am strongly independent and I love exploring...put me anywhere and I will walk for miles and miles! I also really enjoy engaging with local languages. In my spare time I will usually be writing or listening to music, cooking, rock climbing, walking or reading. I also love board games 🙂‍↕️

I am a hard worker and an open minded person. I listen and I adapt, and I am excited to learn about different ways of life and contribute positively to them!

Please note my partner, East, will be travelling with me from September 2025, and we will be available for workaways as a couple from then!

I love so many things, including but not limited to: cats, board games, walking for hours while listening to music, collecting records, making playlists, history, minecraft (it got me through the pandemic), trees, walking dogs, exploring, learning new instruments, pilates and yoga, hiking, DJing, trying new recipes, knitting, dancing, theatre, driving, bird watching (I borrowed my friend's binoculars once and it changed everything), learning a new skill and slowly getting better at it, indoor rock climbing (yet to try outdoor), films

I spent about 10 days at Milo's home in June — it was a really meaningful learning experience. I also met the most amazing fellow workawayers while I was there and feel so lucky to have been able to spend time with them. Milo is very knowledgeable about permaculture and farming, and has amazing stories to tell. He’s also a wonderful cook and… read more shared lots of special recipes with us, along with plenty of knowledge about Puglian traditions and sustainable living. His home is really special, nestled amongst 2 hectares of valleys, fruit trees, fields, and veggie gardens. I really enjoyed the daily rhythm: waking up (very early, as the sun was already strong by 8AM!), checking the chickens, and setting out on the day’s project (which could be anything from painting, mixing compost, and fixing the electric fence, to harvesting vegetables or building trellises). Every day brought something different, which I really appreciated.

The work can be intense, and you’re expected to keep up right away. It helps to be prepared physically and mentally, and open to learning and contributing even when things feel challenging — tiredness, heat, problem-solving, or working with new tools. If you want to push yourself, you will enjoy the challenge, but it might not be for everyone! The days are structured, and there are rules to follow, so being flexible with your usual routine or way of doing things makes a big difference. Overall it’s really rewarding, especially when you get to relax in the afternoon in one of the hammocks or head down to the local bar/mini-market (a lovely family-run spot that serves yummy food, basics, and local ingredients). The early mornings really pay off because by 10am, the working day is already done.

As a workawayer, everyone is expected to do their bit, whether it's helping to prepare for mealtimes, helping with laundry, etc. Being present is important, and part of the experience — if you value lots of personal time and want to stick to strict 5 hours of socialising during work hours / have a hard time contributing outside of that (which naturally, preparing for dinner, setting the table, etc involves), I don't think this will be right for you.

On days off, you can visit some local towns, or head further afield if you make it to the train station in Ostuni. Milo’s place is in the countryside, but there are a couple of buses to Ostuni and Martina Franca that run twice a day. If you can get a car or rent a scooter, you’ll have much more freedom to explore this beautiful region! The accommodation is very comfortable — you’ll stay in one of two trullos. Depending on how many Workawayers are around, you may have a room to yourself or share. There’s a fully equipped bathroom in a separate trullo, and Workawayers have their own living space and fridge. Privacy is respected. Just a heads up: the internet is very limited (no WiFi, and weak signal), though there are a couple of hotspots around the property and Gino’s shop nearby has free WiFi.

If you’re looking to learn about slow and simple living, take a break from screens, eat well, pick up new skills, and discover a beautiful part of Italy, this Workaway could be a great choice. I’m grateful for the experience and wish Milo all the best with his current and future projects. Grazie mille :)
