  • Description

I'm currently on a gap year before starting my graduate studies in Oceanography, and I am spending this time traveling to broaden my cultural exposure and to learn about sustainability/sustainable initiatives around the globe in different cultural contexts.

I love meeting other travelers, spending time exploring the outdoors (especially hiking, climbing, and water sports), and reading and writing.

I got my undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology (genetics, DNA stuff) and Astrobiology (study of life on Earth to understand the potential for life elsewhere), so I love to chat about biology and astronomy!

I am also a bit of a geek and love various geeky pop culture shows, with an especially soft spot for sci fi (the older and cheesier the better, ha!).

  • More details about your skills

    - Previous work-away experiences:
I have completed two previous experiences through the website Worldpackers:
    1. Hostel volunteer in Scotland: main daily tasks involved cleaning/preparing the hostel for new daily guests, and helping provide a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for travelers.
    2. Farmstead at organic apple farm in Norway: daily tasks included apple-picking and apple juice and cider bottling at the in-house cider facility; worked with pallet-jacks, automated bottle-capping machines, and small-scale apple-press

    - Carpentry: Intermediate knowledge and experience. I spent a year doing stagecraft at my local high school, where I helped construct theatre sets for school performances. I have also worked on multiple household construction projects including the design and construction of cabinets and outdoor decks, and the construction and repair of tables and chairs.

    - Gardening: Advanced-intermediate knowledge and experience from cultivating my own organic vegetable garden and yard, as well as tree-planting in temperate and desert climates for volunteer projects. I also took several plant science classes in university, including Plant Physiology and Aquatic Plants. I would love to expand my skills and knowledge in this area though, especially relating to organic and self-sustainable farming.

    - Cooking: I have cooked for large groups during camping and field trips during school, and I consider cooking a passion of mine. I would love to exchange recipes and cooking techniques!

    - Writing: Advanced-intermediate experience in technical and nonfiction informative writing from my university studies. I also maintain a digital travel diary on Instagram, so I have gotten more practice with travel writing.

    - Other: The bulk of my work experience has been in microbiology research laboratories where I have had to learn complex new techniques very quickly, both with my hands and on a computer. I thus have advanced proficiency in general sterile and safety techniques. I also have experience with Python coding and basic software development with both Mac and Windows operating systems.

  • What else ...

I love spending my free time doing outdoor activities, especially water sports and hiking, and exploring nature around the world. I also love cozy evenings in playing board games, reading, and watching movies with other travelers, especially sci-fi and other geeky films.
I also love to learn about the local flora and fauna of wherever I volunteer.
