Description
I'm a girl from Italy and I've just finished my studies in engineering school.

I've always wanted to join Workaway, I've been thinking about it for years and now it feels like it's the perfect time! I'm fascinated with the idea of living in a new country, meeting new people while doing some good - it's a different way of traveling that resonates with me because I enjoy less touristy and crowded places.

Since I was a child and I saw my older cousins going on Erasmus, I've always dreamt of studying and living abroad. My dream came true for the first time when I was 17 and I spent a part of my second last high school year in Spain, living with a family from Ecuador: it was a unique experience and I think I was truly happy during that time. After that, I continued my studies in Italy, away from my hometown, but I was lucky enough to go on my very own Erasmus twice, in Poland and in Switzerland.

I'm not new to volunteering: after my first Erasmus, I joined Erasmus Student Network, which allowed me to get in touch with exchange students in my city, help them with their life in a new country, and organize events for them.

As a workawayer, I would love to meet new people, listen to their life stories and sharing mine, try new foods, cook dishes from my country for people to try. I would love to help people and have an impact on their lives, while making unforgettable memories.

I really love the concept of language learning and I'm very fascinated by it. I've always loved studying grammar and pointing out the differences and similarities between languages. I could easily say I have studied foreign languages my whole life, in some way!

I speak Italian, Spanish and English fluently and I have experience teaching Spanish to middle school kids. Another thing I did is tutoring kids and young adults for maths and physics.
I'm also good with computers, even if I don't have a computer engineer deep knowledge, but I'm quite good at technology.
In general, I could help with anything unless it's something very physically demanding (I don't have lots of muscles). I'm very precise and if I have instructions to follow I will make sure I do everything in the right way!

What else ...
I love music! I listen to a lot of music, nothing too fancy, I just love learning the tunes and decoding the lyrics. From 10 to 19 years, I played in a school band and we used to do something that I would call street percussion/junk percussion: it was so much fun! I know how to read percussion music sheets and I'm currently learning how to read the notes. I had some attempts at playing the piano but I'm not very good.
In the future for sure I would like to study music more seriously and take lessons of piano and percussion.

Alessandra stayed with our family for six weeks and truly enriched our lives in a wonderful way. With her cheerful, upbeat, and helpful nature, she quickly became part of our daily family life. Spending time with Danja's family was truly a magical experience.

It was my first time as a workawayer and I spent six weeks and a half with them. All of them are so sweet, kind and inclusive and they made me feel like a part of the family since the first moment.

My main task was to play with the kids in the morning, and speak to them in English… read more to help them improve it. The job was very pleasant because the kids are very mature, independent and smart, and I received help from them or Danja when I needed ideas about new games or activities.

During the weekends, I was able to travel sometimes, thanks to the convenient location of the village: very close to the main Swiss cities and to Basel Airport.

I also spent some of the weekends with the family and they invited me to many family events: lunches with the grandparents, a trip to Solothurn, going on the mountain bobs, a trip to a museum and many other little adventures. We even attended a very special event: a Yodeling festival, where Markus and his band played the Alphorn. Thanks to this family I was able to discover the authentic Swiss culture, try delicios homemade Swiss dishes and enjoy the beautiful Swiss nature.

The village and the whole atmospere were very peaceful and the time spent there helped me relax and learn to enjoy the simple things in life: we had fun playing with the chickens, making origami with Flavio, trimming the poodle, looking for caterpillars with Julian and Mateo, picking mushrooms, mowing the lawn...every little thing was special and helped me getting back in touch with nature.

I think this was a learning experience both for me and the whole family, because we talked a lot about the culture of our respective countries, the nature, and the languages. Every day was a new adventure and a new learning opportunity: Danja showed me how to maintain the house, the garden, how to raise children in an empathetic and respectful way, and taught me about the Swiss culture and nature. I'm glad that I was able to give back by helping the children improve their English, teach the family about some my country's typical dishes, and help Mateo in the first stages of learning how to walk.

I would recommend this family to anyone, it will always be one of the sweetest memories of my life. I'm so grateful for this experience and I will never forget the kindness of this family that trusted me deeply despite this being my first Workaway experience.
