  • Description

    Hi!

My name is Zak and I am from just outside of Liverpool in the UK. I have just completed my Masters in Sustainable Development from the University of St Andrews in Scotland. For the past few months I have been working in a local gym but I want to explore the world and put my abilities to better use. I have volunteered before in Sierra Leon (teaching and helping to build structures for a hearing impaired school), in Ireland (helping to combat homelessness) and at home (teaching English to migrants trying to integrate). I have also done an internship with an NGO in the UN Human Rights Council writing grant proposals and overseeing the passage of International Human Rights Legislation.

I am looking to continue this work and mix travel with my passion for the environment and social justice issues. I love being outdoors and when I am not in work I can usually be found hiking or camping. I often take my reluctant Labrador, Chicho, on these trips and enjoy running with him in my local area. I also love to read and learn and have a keen interest in history.

I am looking for hard work. I am happy to do pretty much any work. I am leaving my job at the end of March and will be available from the 6th of April for at least a month but up to three if the position is right.

    - Zak

  • More details about your skills

    - Professional writing skills: I have written for a travel blog (https://www.st-artmagazine.co.uk/art-culture-1/2022/2/1/a-cautionary-tale-of-the-best-olives-in-the-world) and a for a Sustainable development blog (https://energyethics.st-andrews.ac.uk/blog/2024-the-year-tech-learned-to-love-the-atom/). On top of this I have also written speeches for different public speaking events and two dissertations. I love to write about everything and enjoy expressing myself in this form.

    - English and History tutoring and teaching: I have some experience teaching basic English both at home and in Sierra Leone. The lessons i led covered basic sentence structure and how to identify and use different types of words (verbs, adjectives, etc). These lessons focused on teaching the students basic sentences and responses such as "My name is... and my favourite food is...." or "I am from... and I am ... years old". I have also tutored in high school level History, and have can cover a vast array of topics- mainly covering the modern era (1450- present).

    - Basic DIY and construction skills: I have always enjoyed DIY and have lots of experience. While in Sierra Leone I helped to construct a small school block, with a team of 10. I am much more experienced with small scale projects (furniture, steps, shelves, etc) but I also have experience with larger structures such as sheds, walls, fencing etc.

    - Bee keeping: While at university i started a bee keeping society with a friend. We had no experience and no equipment but over the course of three years we grew the society and out skills and ultimately started to teach others how to bee keep. I love it, it lets me be outside and enables me to watch these fantastic creatures develop their hive and expand their complex social structures.

    - Fitness coaching: During my time at my gym job I have been able to shadow some fitness sessions and also take part in leading some running club sessions.

    - IT skills & Administrative skills: I am confident using computers and different types of technology. I have held a few positions where I have been tasked with assisting people use apps and set up computers. I have also held administrative positions which have required the use of Excel and other applications to organise and format data.

-Social media promotion: For the first two years of the bee society I ran the social media, creating content (both images and videos) and grew out social media following to nearly 4 thousand over 2 platforms (Facebook and Instagram).
