Description
We are Maden and Maxime, two lifelong friends, both 18 years old and currently studying at a business school in France. We are both eager to step out of our comfort zone and embark on a meaningful human adventure together.
- Maxime is outgoing, resourceful, and always brings a positive energy to the group. He loves to inspire others, takes initiative, and commits fully to every project. His background in Scouting has taught him how to lead activities, adapt to new situations, and work well in a team—even when things don’t go as planned.
- Maden is a calm, reliable, and determined person who enjoys learning new skills and helping wherever he can. He is thoughtful and has a strong sense of responsibility, whether it's for hands-on work or supporting young people in educational or social projects.
As a duo, we are highly complementary and work together smoothly. We are used to creating a positive atmosphere.

What drives us today is the desire to live a genuine cultural immersion away from our daily lives. We want to fully engage with local communities, discover new ways of life, and contribute to meaningful projects. We are looking forward to growing as individuals while doing something impactful.

We spent about 3 weeks at Weza. From the very beginning, we felt at home, as Weza immediately welcomed us into his family. Every morning, from Monday to Friday, we went to school to support the teachers together with our fellow volunteers. In the afternoons, we could go for walks and even travel to Arusha to visit, for example, the Maasai Market.… read more At school, we drew lots of posters, corrected homework, wrote exercises in notebooks, served breakfast and lunch… The children at the school are very welcoming and used to being around volunteers. It was amazing to spend time with them: every morning we did a short sports activity to start the day full of energy. You can really see that thanks to Weza, the children are happy to go to school and very motivated. Finally, Weza’s daughter, “BabeD,” is super funny and, even at only 3 years old, manages to communicate easily with the volunteers. We had a wonderful time and keep beautiful memories of Weza and his family.

Another thing we really appreciated is that Weza was open to all the ideas we wanted to share. For example, we came up with new poster ideas to decorate the classrooms (such as “plants found in Tanzania…”). All we had to do was discuss it with Weza and with the teachers—Ms. Elisa, Juma, and Happiness (MamaD)—to make sure it matched their expectations and the upcoming lessons for the children. We also joined many soccer sessions, playing football with the children, which was great fun.

We loved spending time with the other volunteers, and the strong group spirit came naturally since we all lived together. This allowed us to quickly build great friendships. As for the city, it is safe and not dangerous for volunteers, even at night if you plan to go out on weekends with friends. As students, this trip also gave us the opportunity to improve our English by practicing every day, both with locals and with our friends. Thanks to Weza, we were also able to go on a very complete 2-day, 1-night safari—an unforgettable experience.

The only downside we noticed during this trip is that for people who need privacy, it can be challenging, as we were all living together 24/7 and shared rooms with other volunteers.

We also have a few tips if you are planning a volunteering trip to Tanzania. First, plan a small budget for water, since here you can only drink bottled water, as well as a budget for more European-style food if at some point you feel like eating something sweeter. Regarding the different activities in northern Tanzania, we strongly recommend waiting until you arrive before booking weekend trips, like visiting Moshi and its waterfalls, because Weza can help you find great deals and show you amazing places. About the weather: pack clothes according to the season, as Tanzania is located in the southern hemisphere. For everyday life, you can easily go to the “Laundry” in Arusha to wash your clothes, and for getting around in the city you can use the Bolt app to book tuktuks. Also, if you arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport, Weza can easily arrange a taxi for you in advance, and you just pay the driver in dollars upon arrival. Another tip: avoid exchanging money at the airport. On your first day, you can simply go to “Shoppers” and then to the currency exchange office to change your money into Tanzanian shillings—it’s much better for you. Finally, a little tip: bring a deck of cards if you can, as in the evenings it’s really nice to gather with everyone to play games (for example, CAMBIO).
