  • Description

I am a woman who loves to travel solo. I'm somewhat introverted, but I like people one-to-one. Traveling on my own balances my needs pretty well; I can reach out and be present with others, or retreat to get re-energized. I'm a very calm person, and can handle most situations without getting flustered or anxious. That may be because I am a single mother of one child, now in college. My motto is "always turn left." This came about because I was doing a road trip around Scotland, and I chose to turn left off the main road and I found a little cove where there were seals! I spent an hour watching them before heading to the ferry. Turning left means finding something unexpected and I love that experience.

My favorite place is Scotland, particularly the outlying islands. The sky and the sea are just amazing, and the hospitality of the people is unmatched. I have a long list of places I'd like to see/live, but if I don't get there it's okay. I like to travel SLOW so I'm sure I won't see everything. A few years ago, I founded a Facebook group called Over 60 Solo Women Traveler, which now has more than 25,000 members around the world. This provides a forum for older women who like to go it alone, whether they are new or experienced. I enjoy the conversation and sharing of experiences that occurs in the group. I found that after the pandemic, I've been looking for travel situations that provide meaningful experiences to connect with others.

I like art, but after the museum I like to sit in a cafe and watch people, read a book, drink coffee, talk to the person next to me. I've been learning to draw and paint. I like gardening, reading, writing, and cooking. I like almost all food, wine and whisky.

More details about my language interests
I've tried to learn French on apps and in a classroom. It didn't really work for me, so I'd like to learn maybe in an environment where I'm teaching English and learning another language at the same time. I want to learn Portuguese, French and Italian.

  • More details about your skills

I was trained as a lawyer, but left to work with nonprofits and philanthropy. I'm a strategic thinker and I like to launch new projects. I've been successful as a consultant in this field, writing a lot of grant proposals for organizations. I'm a big picture thinker and can analyze subjects quickly. I'm a good communicator.

I can cook great meals from scratch, mostly without a recipe and often at the drop of a hat. I throw this in, that in -- and come up with something delicious. I bake bread, shuck corn, and feed 50 people.

I was an Airbnb host for a couple of years and prided myself on having a clean and welcoming environment. I tried to also offer advice on restaurants and attractions. Being a host meant changing beds and cleaning bathrooms, restocking supplies, and getting the space ready for the next guest.

I like kids, cats/dogs and horses.

  • Age

    65

  • What else ...

I read lots of mysteries; I'd like to write one. I also like history, particularly ancient history.

I collect vintage pillow cases with embroidery and handmade lace.

I like gin and Scottish whisky but don't drink a lot because alcohol gives me a headache; I like one glass of wine -- but not two. I like coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon. I take milk in both.

I spent a year in northern England for graduate school.

I'm a pretty direct person and try to make sure that I communicate well with people in a clear and concise way. I think we avoid misunderstandings if we have clarity about what's happening, and agree on the facts. I don't try to impose my beliefs on others. I find it to be very disrespectful and the cause of much misery in this world.

    I am an atheist.

I believe every person has value and our purpose in life is to find that value and support it.

I'm a bit of a night owl, but a little slow in the morning.
