  • Description

Kia ora! I'm Trish, born and raised in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and 31 years old.

I've lived in Melbourne, Australia on and off since I was 18, broken up by travel (including countries in South America, South East Asia, Western and Central Europe) and periods living overseas (in the UK and Colombia).

I've done a fair amount of Couchsurfing (both surfing and hosting) since I began travelling; however, travel dates, travel buddies and other commitments have meant I haven't had the opportunity to get involved in Workaway before now.

I'm about to move to Canada on a two-year working holiday visa, with no set plans and no rush to be anywhere, and I'm really excited to become an active member of the Workaway community! I love the sense of community, openness, and mutual cultural and skills exchange that underpins both of these platforms.

What I can contribute: I have a very strong worth ethic, I'm cheerful and friendly, I take the initiative and I pick up new skills quickly. I'm motivated, responsible, and I take pride in completing jobs / tasks to a high standard. I'm a good cook (vegetarian / vegan meals), I'm detail-orientated and I'm a clean and tidy person. I'm respectful, I'm an open and honest communicator, I'm good at taking direction and I'm keen to learn new skills.

I have experience volunteering, and I have professional experience working with children, and in the hospitality and tourism industries. The past few years I've worked in public policy (treaty building with First Nations Australians, multicultural affairs and anti-racism, evaluation of family violence support services) and I'm passionate about progressing social equity.

What I'm looking for: I'm very interested but not hugely experienced in gardening, permaculture, building and DIY jobs and I'd love to expand my knowledge and skills in these areas. I am looking for Workaway experiences where I can genuinely connect with my hosts, learn from them and make a meaningful contribution to their projects.

I'm keen to explore Canada's natural beauty, immerse myself in local culture, improve my French, and enjoy a slower pace of life than is possible with a 40-50 hour a week job. I'm looking forward to travelling with purpose (i.e., being part of my hosts' projects), staying in each place for long enough to settle in, and having time to read, go for hikes, do yoga, and get to know the locals.

I look forward to meeting you!

  • More details about your skills

I have more than 10 years experience in customer service: in bars, cafes, restaurants and hotels. I've worked alone, in small teams and in large organisations, and I've supervised and managed other staff in various jobs. I'm not a trained chef but I'm a good cook (vegetarian / vegan meals).

I have standard computing and social media skills but I am far from an expert.

I'm a quick learner and I'm motivated to expand my skillset and knowledge. I'm an open and effective communicator, I take direction well, and I'm comfortable taking the initiative and working in a self-directed way.

I have a TESOL certification (teaching English as a second language) with further training specifically in teaching children, adults, tutoring and teaching grammar. However, I have yet to use this diploma professionally. I'm more or less fluent in Spanish and I've recently started learning French.
