  • Description

    Hello!
I'm a first time solo-international traveller and am nervous but excited for the opportunity :). I love working with my hands and being outdoors- currently I work for a conservation corps in Utah, United States, where I do a variety of conservation-oriented projects alongside a crew of likeminded folk.
As far as outdoorsy stuff goes, Im really into climbing and hiking at the moment, and would ideally spend time in a location near the mountains where I can climb with some locals, either sport or trad.
I would also like to take some smaller backpacking trips in nature while I am abroad (maybe 3 days to a week each trip). Ive hiked a couple hundred miles of the Oregon Coast trail and the full 486 miles of the Colorado trail, and I think its a great way to experience an area in a way more personal than just staying in hostels can be.
When Im at home I'm usually doing something like the above, but I also like spending a fair amount of time in cafés, reading and sipping a hot drink. It is nice to find some downtime to rest and recover a bit in between work and play, and Ill usually always have a book and my mini chess set with me to pass the time.

  • More details about your skills

Ive done a fair bit of outdoor work in the past, but am excited to learn new skills, whatever they might be! Some of the things I've done include:
    ~Conservation Corps~
I'm currently working for the mountain west division of a conservation corps, based out of Utah. So far I have done fuels reduction in preparation of wildfires (US Forest Service), felling of hazardous trees (National Park Service), invasives species removal, stream clearing and willow harvesting, trailbuilding for mountain bikers, and historical restoration (BLM + NPS).
    Proficient with:
Chainsaws- I have an s212 certification, qualifying me for basic chainsaw use and maintenance. Comfortable bucking and limbing with basic binds and situations, and felling basic, "A Faller" trees.
Hand tools: regularly use loppers, handsaws, shovels, picks, mcclouds, pulaskis, rock bars and more to complete a variety of tasks (see above).

    -Permaculture work
LOTS OF WEEDING! It was an organic farm that I worked on and as a result we would spend hours a day weeding various garden beds. I also did some fruit, vegetable and herb harvesting, and general property upkeep like tree and hedge trimming.
I've also kept a personal garden sporadically, depending on where I am and if my lease will let me stay through the growing season. Its usually nothing big, but will have tomatoes, squash, zucchini, peppers and beans. Pretty much just enough for my table and some for the neighbors :).

    ~Animal work~
    Horses:
I've spent about two years working around horses (one year of full-time, live-in position) and would love to be around them again!
-experience in catching, tacing up and tacing down, grooming, rotating between pastures, assisting ferriers, and of course, lots and lots of mucking, feeding, and throwing hay. I have done some light riding, mostly just walking and trotting on well-broken horses.

    Chickens and ducks:
-cared for newly hatched chicks, up to about 150 at a time. (Did this for 4 springs in a row). Changed/cleaned water feed and bedding twice daily. Maintained proper temperature with heat lamps. Separated sick or injured chicks into isolation pods to monitor condition. I haven't personally hatched any but it seems like it would be fun :).

    Dogs and cats:
I've had dogs as family pets all my life and love being around them. Our first was a rottweiler and such a sweetheart. Ive also house-sat for several different families who had dogs and cats (including one highly energetic great dane), and if I wasnt travelling myself I would absolutely want one of my own.

    Other:
I've also been lucky enough to have worked with a lot of other animals in various capacities/caretaker roles, including cattle, mineature donkeys, goats, reptiles, alpacas, and most recently wolves (which was amazing!).

    ~Forestry~
I worked in New Hampshire for two years doing tree felling for firewood, and for the improvement of bird habitat for the Audubon Society. We used primarily bow saws, axes, mauls and wedges to cull and process pine, poplar, oak, and ocassionally beach trees into firewood. Some of the firewood would be sold, some donated. We tried to find a balance between culling useful wood from the forest and leaving enough of the forest intact that it could regenerate/live well.

    Other Skills:
Have operated a small farm and implement tractor (5 months) and a forklift (5 years).

    CPR/AED certification
    Wilderness First Aid certification
    Wilderness Anaphylaxis training
