  • Description

Hi, we are Bear & Katie! Bear is a loveable cat with loads of joy! Katie(that's me) is a quirky individual who is walking a sustainable path to a brighter way of life.

We love spending time in nature, breathing in the sun or swimming in local waters (Bear not so much!), and aligning our lives with our values. We especially love opportunities for natural building, and all things needed to live in a wild way. We are eager to learn & do tasks helping with vegetable gardening, tending animals, carpentry, canning & drying food, harvesting, as well as other homestead tasks we haven't mentioned, we're pretty interested in it all! (Bear is especially good at strolling along to a hiding spot and then leaping out when you least expect it and plans to do lots of that in our wild spots!).

We are seeking a calm place where we can make meaningful contributions to the project, land and people we are working with.
As well as be at peace with the folks around us, communicate easily and with smiles as they come; keeping our hearts open!

Please reach out to us if you are interested in who we are, we are happy to connect and talk.

Blessings on the new year, we look forward to talking!

Recently I worked in a first nations artisan gallery in Duncan and really got an expansion of connecting with local cultural knowledge and peoples.

Before that I had a career as a union heavy equipment operator for over a decade, operating loader, bobcat, excavator, zoomboom, forklift, skidder, backhoe, and a little bit of dozer as well as farm tractor. Then I worked as a public worker for a small municipality on the west coast of Vancouver Island running their garbage truck as both driver and collector, was their landfill operator, did trail maintenance and general maintenance of village lands, ie: weedwacking, raking, weeding and invasive species removal, painting, and a little bit of water and sewer work. Also, I was their health and safety officer. Phew, that's a mouthful!!
Suffice to say, I am very well-versed in working safety and with lots and lots of time working outside in all kinds of weather and in very diverse roles. I can also move and lift heavy things as needed and bend & crouch often easily. I had a community garden plot during my time there and started to learn about growing food.

In my twenties I worked as a nanny, in outdoor gear sales and restaurants and a tad bit of tree-planting while I trained to become a professional modern dancer, alongside some international traveling.

I have always loved children and being a part of their worlds! I am also good at cleaning and various house tasks, as well as starting to learn to really like cooking.

Another project that honed new skills was renovating my 1929 heritage home in Nelson, making an unfinished basement into a walk out garden level suite (designing it too), and adding a kitchen extension on the main floor + balcony on the top floor. A total bathroom reno on the main floor and restored the original hardwood floors. There was a ton of professional hired help but the scope of entire project from start to finish plus lots of the "grunt work" was as the lead.

These days life is much slower, each day taking time for breath. Walking the path of living by what our planet needs~for all of our futures depend on this. One sustainable step after another...

    Commendation from my cousin:
    Creativity
    Resourcefulness
    Teachable
    Grit*
    Commitment

Creativity: thinks outside and inside the box. Explores and explores even… new ideas or old ones applied in new ways
Resourcefulness: draws from available information and agencies, and able to search these out in creative ways.
Teachable: while she is at the same time one who knows her own mind, she is also one who listens to ideas that make sense, and tries them, tweaks them, and applies them.
Grit: willing to tough things, she once upon a time recently lived in a teepee in a friends back yard.
Commitment: She has yet to give up! Finds ways to cope and continue, like cat snuggling!

  • What else ...

We are especially seeking a place where a sustainable pace of work is encouraged and that our days truly encompass a wholesome and fulfilling life overall...one that helps protect our planet through "values in action"! ....and if it's a good match we are interested in seeing about the potential for a longer stay. Oh yes we bring lots of our own tools! And tool belt! Although Bear's hammer is awfully small!! :)
