  • Description

Hi! I'm Sophie, a 31-year-old traveler from Quebec, Canada. I've been traveling since I was 17, and somewhere along the way I realized that my favorite part of traveling isn't checking destinations off a list—it's slowing down, meeting local people, learning new skills, and experiencing everyday life from a different perspective.

One of the most rewarding experiences I've had was spending six months backpacking solo across Asia. It challenged me in the best possible way and taught me to be independent, adaptable, and confident. I'm now traveling solo through Central America with the same mindset: to improve my Spanish, spend more time in nature, learn practical skills, and experience local life beyond the typical tourist path.

Back in Canada, I worked for an architecture firm, where I mainly helped with administration and created basic content for social media. I also completed a three-year program in interior design, which gave me a creative eye, attention to detail, and an appreciation for well-designed spaces. However, marketing, social media, and interior design aren't the types of work I'm hoping to do through Workaway. I'm much more excited about getting my hands dirty, helping with hands-on projects, and learning by doing.

At this point in my life, I'm much more interested in experiences than routines. Rather than spending my days behind a desk, I wanted to challenge myself, learn practical skills, and experience a different way of living alongside local people.

Before that, I spent three years working as a housekeeper in Vancouver. I've also worked as a nanny and a dog walker. Looking back, those jobs taught me much more than cleaning or childcare—they taught me responsibility, adaptability, respect for other people's homes, and the importance of being someone others can rely on.

I'm especially interested in gardening, farming, animal care, cooking, DIY projects, eco-projects, renovations, and learning more about construction. While I'm still gaining experience in these areas, I'm a very fast learner, I enjoy physical work, and I'm always eager to help wherever I'm needed.

I also love photography—not professionally, but as a way to capture the little moments that make traveling so special. Whether it's people, landscapes, animals, or everyday life, I enjoy telling stories through the photos I take.

Friends and coworkers would probably describe me as hardworking, curious, social, adventurous, positive, creative, and easy-going. I'm always smiling, I enjoy staying busy, I take initiative, and I genuinely like finding ways to organize, improve, or leave a place a little better than I found it.

I speak both French and English fluently, and I'm currently learning Spanish. My Spanish is still very basic, but becoming conversational is one of my biggest goals during this trip.

I don't smoke and strongly prefer smoke-free environments. I enjoy a drink occasionally, but I'm definitely not a party person. I much prefer meaningful conversations, shared meals, peaceful environments, and spending time outdoors.

For me, Workaway isn't just a way to travel more affordably. It's an opportunity to become part of someone's daily life, contribute wherever I can, and learn skills that simply can't be learned from books or behind a desk. If I leave a Workaway having learned something new, shared a few laughs, built genuine friendships, and helped make someone's daily life a little easier, I'll consider it a successful experience.

  • What else ...

One of the things that makes me happiest is spending time outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, kayaking, swimming, camping, relaxing by the water, or simply enjoying nature, that’s where I feel most at home. I also love discovering local food, trying new recipes, and sharing meals with others.

One of my main reasons for doing Workaway is to learn useful, practical skills related to farming, gardening, construction, DIY, and outdoor projects. I want to work with my hands, spend more time outside, and learn by doing.

I’m looking for experiences that feel grounded and connected to nature, where I can contribute to real projects, see visible progress, and learn from people with practical knowledge. I’m especially interested in understanding how things are built, grown, maintained, and improved.

I’m also very social and enjoy meeting people, sharing meals, joining activities, and having meaningful conversations. I’m not much of a party person. I much prefer evenings around a campfire, watching the sunset, playing board games or cards, or sharing stories after a good day’s work.

I believe everyone has something to teach and something to learn. If I can gain useful skills, contribute to a meaningful project, spend time in nature, and create genuine connections along the way, I’ll consider my Workaway a success.
