My name is Silverio, or "Sil" for short. I love exploring and wandering. I also love meeting interesting people, learning about different cultures, sharing my skills and learning new ones! Genuine, meaningful connections and experiences are important to me. I am from the beautiful Driftless region of the Midwestern United States. And have visited, or lived in, every region of my great nation. My ethnic background is mostly German and Cuban. I am a well-seasoned traveler with many miles and experiences under my belt, always thinking about the next journey.
I have spent over a year in Latin America (consecutively) split between Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador, respectively. Have been to Europe three times now, and will be returning in the future. Africa and Asia are definitely on my list, too! I enjoy volunteering partly because it exposes me to different ways of living, new perspectives and ideas. I choose this path in order to enrich my life, as well as the lives of those close to me. And, naturally, to expand my knowledge and understanding as much as possible.
I'm very tidy, organized and considerate of others. Basic manners, punctuality, effective communication and cleanliness mean a lot to me. Living harmoniously in, and competently managing, communal spaces is nothing new. I've grown out of wild partying and do not drink alcohol regularly. I'm pretty laid back, tolerant and understanding. I like to live by the "Golden Rule" of treating others as I hope to be treated. I do not litter, try my best to recycle or reuse everything possible. I respect nature and what it provides us. I respect the property, privacy, boundaries and personal liberties of those I share with. Just as I expect to receive the same considerations and respect. Many I've shared with have thanked me for being as tidy and considerate as I am.
I'm a skilled builder/handyman with many other talents to offer. Rough carpentry is my specialty. I will assist hosts with larger building projects, do repairs, smaller jobs and minor renovations as a volunteer. I own 2.15 acres in Colorado and 1 acre in New Mexico. These parcels will be developed and utilized. On my lands, I will do a lot of the construction and development myself. And will likely end up being a host on Workaway in the future! I love working with my hands and the satisfaction of a job well-done. If you need someone handy, with a can-do attitude and good attention to detail, plus plenty of real-world experience, I can help you and yours with a wide variety of tasks!
Additionally, I have a considerable amount of experience in hospitality. Aside from the volunteering I've done in different hostels throughout Latin America, I managed a high-end bed & breakfast in the city center of Amsterdam for half a year. In Guadalajara, Mexico, I managed a very lively backpackers hostel in the heart of the city for 4 months! Additional volunteer-related, professional and personal references available upon request. Unfortunately, there are at least two Workaway hosts I stayed with that failed to leave me the good review I deserved. Even though I was kind enough to leave good reviews for them. Here's to new and better experiences!
Art, music and science are some of my greatest passions. I love to paint, sketch and craft, play bass & guitar. Working on artistic projects during my travels is something I'd really enjoy. I am more of a dog person, but love animals. I do have some experience in organizing social events and would like to have more. Walking tours, art crawls, museum events, and so many other options to consider! Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, cycling are some of the outdoor hobbies I enjoy the most. I have great respect for the natural world and connecting with it is important to me, but I do enjoy a good time in the city as well. I have many interests that stem from what I'm most passionate about, and could write a book about them. So, there's a little bit about me :) Thanks for reading! If you want to know anything else, feel free to message. Ciao!Interests
