  • Description

We are Seren & Jack, from the UK. We’re 25 & 27 and, in May (2023), we decided it was time to make a change. So we packed up our lives and began our open-ended trip around the world. We’ve spent the past three months surfing our way through Sri Lanka and Indonesia, and while we’ve had a fantastic time, we’re craving a feeling of purpose. We’d love to get involved with a project and feel more connected to a community. And we'd especially like to learn more about organic farming, permaculture and sustainable living.

We are very active, open-minded, and easy-going people, who love to be outdoors. In the UK we lived in a small wooden cabin with a large garden. Our cabin was falling down around us and had no central heating system. We quickly got very good at DIY and chopping wood! We also love to grow our own produce and had a fantastic vegetable garden that kept us fed in the summer months. We are no strangers to simple living and embrace the hard work that it often entails.

Together we have a wide range of skills and are both very fast learners, who are always happy to get stuck in wherever we are needed!

    Seren -

Before we left the UK, I was working as the operations manager for a very successful not-for-profit surf school for people with disabilities (https://surfabilityukcic.org/), and still write the occasional funding application on their behalf remotely. Through this job, I developed great computer skills, an eye for detail and discovered a talent for bringing order to chaos. This was a fully self-driven role, requiring excellent organisational skills, and I was entrusted to manage my own time as well as everyone else's.

I'd previously worked in a whole range of 'unskilled' jobs such as cleaning holiday homes, waitressing, shop assistant, animal carer at a petting farm, guide for the blind, and specialist home tutor for children with autism. I also have a degree in meteorology, which hasn't proved overly useful so far - but feel free to ask me about the weather!

I'm a fast learner, and comfortable working independently or as part of a team. I'm happy to help with whatever needs doing, and confident that somewhere amongst all that experience I have skills that will be useful!

    Jack-

For the past couple of years, I’ve worked as a University Technician, providing support to engineering research and teaching groups. This role involved a lot of problem-solving, DIY, and I was responsible for the maintenance & repairs of a variety of equipment. Through this job, I developed strong practical skills, an ability to learn new techniques quickly, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

I also have previous experience as a chef and so, at home (and away) I am entrusted to do all of the cooking. I am very passionate about food, in particular, making healthy plant-based meals that taste fantastic.

At home, I take full responsibility for ensuring we are warm all winter. This not only involves chopping, moving, and stacking tonnes of wood but also building structures to store it all. It takes at least a year of prep to keep us warm for a whole winter season - it’s a big job!

Oh, I also hold a master’s degree in chemical engineering, not that I’ve ever used it…

  • What else ...

We love to surf, hike, climb, explore new places and spend as much time in nature as we can. We're sociable people, but are also comfortable in our own company.

We love animals! Seren grew up around cats, dogs, chickens, ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs etc. and has also worked with goats, horses, sheep. And Jack gets very excited every time we meet any animals! But we've discovered that he is useless at catching chickens..

Also, Seren is annoyingly good at every card game!
