Description

We are young couple who are taking a year out of our careers to see the world and experience new cultures. We are from rural Scotland (UK) living out of a converted camper van and want to travel as far as Turkey while visiting every country in between. Ruby works in public health and data science but her passions are art and handicrafts such as painting, crochet and macrame. Her goal for workaway is to get more in touch with those skills and spend more time in practical and creative roles than she ordinarily gets with her desk job. Paul is a free-lance camera man with an interest in moving towards sustainability and environmentalism. He is looking to develop skills in gardening and farming while using his camera background to help highlight the goals and aims of sustainable agriculture. We are both relaxed people who love sitting by a campfire and cooking home-grown veg. Paul will bring his guitar and Ruby will bring her mandolin and we might even play a few tunes after dark (only if you ask us to!). We're self-sufficient with our own off grid camper van and can always cook for ourselves, or for others. Our main passion is spending as much time outdoors as we can, and learning new skills to help make the world a more vibrant and sustainable place.

More details about my language interests
We would both like to learn how to at least pronounce the Cyrillic alphabet. Would be really keen to learn the basics of any country we're in. Paul would particularly like to learn Romanian. Ruby would particularly like to improve her French/Spanish

Paul:
- Paul is a camera operator with several years experience working across the arts in London. He's currently touring Europe with no less than 4 cameras, 3 microphones, and 1 drone... and is keen to use them to help film some of the amazing things he sees and works on.
- Alongside camera operating, Paul was an install engineer in London where he honed his DIY and electronics skills to a level where they were able to convert an old postal van into a home. He's very experienced with woodwork and brings with him a toolbox with all that he might need to turn a random scrap of wood into a little useful object.
- Paul's passion is for renewable and sustainable farming and gardening and this is an area where he wants to see how the theory is put into practice and get his hands dirty.
- At some point along the way, Paul picked up a degree in music and has his guitar in his van to prove it. He's also prepared to play piano if encouraged enough...

Ruby:
- Ruby is a very skilled artist across many disciples, she paints, crafts, macrames (string craft - plant hangers, wall hangings, solutions by rope), lino printing, crochet. She has an artistic mind and throws herself into any creative or decorating task.
- She loves nature and is a keen gardener with lots of experience in a polytunnel.
- On the technical side, Ruby's day job involves high end coding and computer science. She makes a phenomenal spreadsheet and is always coming up with ways to make life easier with excel.

Both:
- Love to cook vegetarian and vegan food, and can cook from our van if needed - we've bought a big seasoning cupboard along with us.
- Can drive, and have a van if needed to pick up larger supplies.

What else ...

Paul loves Chess/checkers and has a board with him to get on with any strangers even if there are no shared languages between them. We both really enjoy a board game of any sort, and we've bought a couple with us. We both used to play in a Ceilidh (traditional Scottish music) band together and have bought a couple of instruments along with us in our van in case of an opportunity for a jam.
