Hello!

I am Beatrice, Swiss, 70 years old and living with my partner and our dog Zoe (9 years old) in the Italian speaking part, called Ticino.
I am a German teacher. We own a house and a big garden and we manage the maintenance with workawayers from all over the world (see host list) "Help out in our garden" with beautiful view on mountains and lakes in Ticino, Switzerland.

Now I would love to make some experiences as a workawayer. I like to help teaching English or any task around the house or with children.

In January 2020 I was in Marocco for my first workaway experience, helping in the desert: bringing the sand to the court for making mad to put on the walls in the new rooms. Nice teamwork!
With my partner I hosted 33 workawayers from all over the world - we love the spirit of WORKAWAY and the way of learning by doing!

I had a wonderful week at Gunarathna and Damayanthi’s place!
With their two well educated sons, who have charming personalities, they are the most welcoming people ever and they made me feel incredibly comfortable from the moment I got there. They are very kind to nature, animals, persons and anything.
My voluntary work consisted of joining… read more Gunarathna every day during his English lessons at the homes of the students. We reached the students by motorbike and I must say that he is a really good driver. I was involved in the conversations with the students and we could feel free to talk about anything we liked. The students showed their interest and asked many questions about my life and my country. We reached the students by motorbike and I must say that Gunarathna is a really good driver. The rides were fun and I saw so the different surroundings.
After the lessons I could learn a lot about the Sri Lankan way if cooking: Damayanthi, his wife, spent a lot of her time in the kitchen preparing every day - with a big smile - nice dishes with fresh ingredients and I shared the delicious meals with the family. Compliments to the outstanding cook!
For my Swiss meal “Crispy Chicken Thighs …” I went by bike with Kaveesha and Shavendra to buy all ingredients! The close market at the street offert a nice variety of fresh vegetables - in the small shop there we could hardly find breadcrumbs, they call it biscuit powder! With the ice-cream and some sweet drinks the boys were very happy! When we prepared the potatoes, carrots, green beans and cucumber salad the boys helped me in the kitchen like professionals :=) and we had so much fun together.
We had also fun playing together with the neighbor’s children: hide and seek and catch me! Playing ECKOLO and cards like UNO:=)
On Shavendra’s birthday, he turned 8, the parents started to cook at 5 o’clock in the morning to prepare food for the orphans at Anuradhapura. I liked to help with the cooking and we brought the food to the children. It’s a tradition in this family to celebrate the birthdays of their sons bringing food to the orphans and sharing lunch there with them. I admire this idea!!
After lunch we could watch special dances for us celebrated by the children. I think this is a nice way to thank and I enjoyed the dances a lot. At the end the children bowed in front of us to show their gratitude.
As we were at Anuradhapura we visited together the tempel and honored Sir Buddha. Gunarathna is also a pundit tour guide !
I learned many things, not only about their culture and religion but also about their way of living and working. This was such a unique experience that I can recommend to anyone.

I am so happy I had the chance to live with this lovely family!
I wish I could go again!

Gianmarco i an openminded person and he made us feel comfortable in his ancient (from 1700) rural farmstay.
We loved this place in the nature and we liked to be free to decide what kind of work to do: general maintenance, separate waste (plastic, glass, paper …) feeding the three dogs and the cats, cooking.
