  • Description

    This is me, Paula.

I'm a Philosophy grad student who is increasingly alienated by city-life. I really enjoy studying, but the past years have been a little too theoretical and much too removed from nature. I grew up in the countryside, in a tiny village in Germany and, while I didn't appreciate it as a teenager, I now miss the sense of freedom that comes from being surrounded by nothing but forests and meadows.

I might know things about Kant's Transcendental Idealism or Wittgenstein's Philosophy of Language, but I have no idea about growing my own food. Why am I capable of writing elaborate essays on obscure philosophical topics, but don't even know the names of the plants and the birds that surround me? I want to learn. No. I need to. The names of plants, of rocks, of birds, of trees. How to hunt, how to fish, how to handle farm animals. How to find edible plants and mushrooms. How to conserve food like people did in the old times. How to live with the seasons and how to grow roots, to become connected with the earth I live off. Not, to consider it mere dirt devoid of life, while it is actually the very substance our life is based on; and very much alive.

If I should describe myself, I'd say this: I'm calm and thoughtful. I can be a bit socially anxious at times. But I love deep discussions and to listen to the stories different people have to tell. I will annoy you with a million of questions, if you let me. People say I'm a deep thinker. The truth is, I'm a deep overthinker. I love to write. And I LOVE to read. When I was young, my mom described me like this: She is either buried in a book, or exploring the woods, clambering up riverbeds, climbing trees.
I walk barefoot a lot, even in the city.

My favorite places are libraries. Cemeteries, because of the quiet. Churches. Forests. I dream of experiencing true silence. Of waking up near a lake. Of being the only person in a vast wilderness. Of seeing the stars, which happens so rarely where I'm living right now. I often feel lonely among crowds of people and prefer my own company or the company of a few good friends.

  • More details about your skills

I have a weird sort of talent: the ability to entertain myself with the smallest imaginable input. To be content with repetitive tasks without feeling deprived of entertainment. I can dig in the earth for hours until my muscles give out, and actually enjoy myself, not just because I'm getting a good workout, but because I enter this mysterious state known as "flow". I like work that rewards you with seeing that something got done. Cleaning, digging stuff, making hay, picking fruit, chopping wood, mucking stables. Simple tasks, really.

I don't really have any special skills . But I'm open to anything, very motivated and quick to learn. I'm also used to helping around a lot, as I grew up with six siblings on the countryside, with some animals and a huge apple orchard. I often assisted my dad when he was building things. Later, when I was 18, I volunteered at a life-sharing community in Greece, working with people with various mental disabilities. (Check it out here: https://estiaagiosnikolaos.org/)
It was one of the most intense years of my life and sharing our life together was truly special. My tasks were simple: I helped out with cooking, hygiene, daily tasks, preparing activities (baking, music, art), etc. I experienced an amount of love and mutual respect I have yet to find among neurotypical people.

I love music and like to play piano and organ. Always happy to play and/or to make music together!
